Good luck, lol. Honestly, your best bet is going to be to go to a foster based rescue and adopt an older dog. They'll know the personalities of the dogs in their care, how they do with cats and how well they tolerate the heat.

If you're looking for a suggestion on breeds, you'll probably want to avoid hunting dogs (high energy and prey drive), mollosser/brachycephalic dogs (dogs with smooshed in faces), and working dogs (high energy, needs work to do).

I'd wait until your at least in Florida.  Then go to a rescue shelter or a no kill shelter.  These are usually the best bets when it comes to the "owners" knowing more about each dogs habbits and likes and/or dislikes.  With all the dogs in these shelters you most likely will have quite a few options.  After they recommend a few to you I would recommend to let the dog pick you!

I have had 2 dogs.  One was unreliable with people and the current one is the best.  Shes a mix.  Go for a rescue who fosters, an owner surrender or a private adoption.  Make sure the dog has lived with cats and anything else thats important to you(like to go to the park with lots of kids or family....)

The only dogs that have been good with cats for me, have been my grandma's mixed breed dogs, but this is probably because they were inherited from my great grandma, and have been raised with all sorts of other animals.

I would go to a rescue shelter and adopt once you're in FL. You're bound to find dogs that are similar to these conditions :) good luck!

I get my dogs as puppies. I want to be able to say I've known this dog almost from birth....I have 2 pit bulls one of which is 16 and 7 cats....one of them turned 29 last Feb. The dogs are smart and very trainable and get along great with the cats. I have lots fun with it when I tell people that I have pit bulls and cats.

I have a blue nosed pitbull who I have had since he was 7 weeks old, he was raised around cats and he absolutely LOVES the kitties. They are his best friends.

I don't know if you were looking for a small dog but for purebreds the bischon would be a good choice.  They are friendly and sociable but if you get a puppy it will be hyper and get into everything just like any puppy would.  Small dogs also tend to be difficult to housebreak and with small bladders there would be a problem if they can't get outside to use the bathroom for an extended period of time. I think an older calm rescue dog that has been in foster care with cats so it's temperament is known would be the best choice.

You defianetly should not get a hound, terrier or a herding breed. Toy breeds would be best for you, such as the shih tzu, lhasa apso or the japenese chin. There are also many other dog breeds that would be suitable which are larger like the leonberger and the labrador which are renowned for their friendliness towards cats. If you are worried about your dog harming your cats then you should take time to train it obidience as soon as you get it.

OHH Japanese Chin!!! I had one and she was my little angel. They are very cat like in their mannerisms as well. Adopting an older dog that has been established with cats is a great idea as well. My best kitty dog is a Jack-a-bee. Jackrussel-beagle. He is very calm. Which goes against his breed standards. So you never know until they are older.
