Eating Wet Food Too Fast! At my wits end...

My darling Amber has become a bulimic!  She gorges on wet food and then... right back up it comes!  I have tried raising her food bowl (it's on a shoe box), now I've put it on a flat plate and flattened it out all over to hopefully slow it down... and she always has some kibble out, so I don't think she has a reason to be that hungry... I read in some threads how some people put some kibble on the wet food to slow down the process, but she doesn't chew her kibble, so I'm not sure it will really slow her down.. has anyone else had a challenge like this?  What was your solution?

p.s. she had this same issue with the kibble, and for now my solution has been to leave out small amounts on two separate, raised dishes, and so far that has worked...

I would suggest reducing the amount of wet food you give her at a time. I have one kitty that can't eat as much as the other kitties in one setting so I put a smaller amount out for him and then about an hour or so later, I'll give him the rest. If he gets it all at once, he throws up. I've also been known to give kibble as the second feeding if I'm short on time.

If kitty is free feeding on dry and then you provide wet, he is never getting an empty belly so he overeats. When we free fed Simon, the kitty above, he threw up all the time. He just can't manage his diet on his own (our cat Riley was free fed most of his life and has never had a weight issue). I would suggest you stop free feeding. Check out the nutrition area of the board for some great advice on how to feed your kitty for his optimal health. Our cats now eat twice a day (wet) and only get kibble as a treat (so instead of them getting a couple of Temptations, they get a few kibbles).

Good luck!

I would try smaller portions and more feedings if possible.  I would also use a timed feeder for the kibble and time the kibble at different times you feed the wet.  The kibble in smaller portions also.  This way she is getting more feedings daily but in much smaller amounts.  Just my

I would try smaller meals more often. In the wild (feral) cats will hunt every few hours and will eat mouse sized meals. Mice are very smal. And they will eat 7/10 on average per day. Some cats don't like being on a schedule of one or two meals a day, it makes them nervous and then they gorge and puke.

My guy gets a rounded teaspoon of wet food every 5 hours or so, and I know kibble is bad, but we give him a lean tablespoon of dry in one of those kibble balls during the day when we aren't home. He has to work the ball, so he eats slower.

This is also a good method to make sure your cat doesn't get fat.

I had a feral that did the same thing. He would get super hungry and gulp his food down and then it would come right back up.
If I were you, I would give her a smaller portion of the kibble and also a smaller portion of the wet at a time. If you only give her, say a teaspoon full, and she eats that fast, see how her tummy reacts. If she's okay with it, give her a little bit more.
Or just give her tiny bits at a time so she is forced to take little breaks in between.
So sorry your kitty's tummy isn't feeling so good.
Lots of love to you both :vibes: .
