Lil man broke his leg a little over two months ago. The vet first gave him a hard fiberglass cast which came off after two weeks because his leg muscles became smaller.  They put a new cast on that fit much better and he went on for the next 8 weeks with it, but it shifted and began rubbing against his shoulder and causing a bald spot.  I immediately brought him back to the vet, they removed the cast and put him in a splint.  Lil man did very well with the splint, it was on for another two weeks and he was very frisky and running around my apartment like he was a kitten again.  Yesterday was a very exciting day because he was finally getting the splint removed!!  I dropped him off before work with high hopes.  But when I arrived to pick him up I was met with bad news.   Lil man's leg was riddled with sores and his paw was extremely swollen.  He was meow'ing in pain and my vet seemed distressed.  She showed me the current x-ray and explained that his bones did not heal the way they anticipated and that he will probably need surgery to put a pin in place.  She said the break was just very bad and not enough callice formed around the bone for it to be stable.  They sent lil man home with me, told me to just see if he puts pressure on the leg within the next 7 days.  So far he is not able to put ANY pressure on it (maybe because the sores are so painful?) and he is noticeably uncomfortable :( I gave him some pain medicine that I had left over from when he first broke the leg and that helped him relax and he was able to sleep.  I feel so bad for him!

Years ago I had a cat that came home with a broken leg, and he had a pin inserted down the long bone and the fragments wired togeather.  He did very well though couldn't straighten it properly, and needed two further ops - one to remove the pin, and one quite a bit later to remove the wires as they seemed to be causing him pain.

Hope your lad does as well, in the end.
