I have a spayed - mommy - former feral born.

Her mate, also now neutered, keeps cleaning her backside - for lack of a better word, sorry - trying to be sensitive here.

Since they've been inside, I've noticed this happening on occasion and figured it is just a natural grooming procedure (?).

Tonight I saw Gray licking the rug - so went to investigate - couldn't see anything.

He was so intent on licking the rug that I was able to groom him when it's usually impossible to even touch him in certain places - so, I'm figuring some sort of emission fluid from Gigi?

Gigi comes running over to me for grooming (she's a grooming sponge).  I brushed her from her head down to the tip of her tail, running my hand after the brush - and the bottom side of her tail was wet. There was a definite odor - can't define what the smell was like - it wasn't offensive, or pungent.

Now, she could have, somehow, dropped her tail into the canned food dish - food has gravy - and that is what it was?  BUT ???

So, anyone got any ideas of what may be going on - is it something of a sexual nature, or perhaps a health issue I might need to address.

I have not had her to the vet since she was spayed in 2009 - she's still not tame enough for me to pick her up so I am reluctant to rock-the-boat on her trusting me, but if I need to take her, I need to take her!  Otherwise, she appears to be in perfect health ... .

Gigi and her Beau, Gray

Cats have anal glands and occasionally have problems with them.  It might be worth a quick trip to the vet to get hers checked.  Cats usually have a totally horrified expression while the vet has a feel...  If you take her, get a general health check at the same time - eyes, ears, mouth, coat, listen to her heart, feel tummy, weigh her.

You need a secure, preferably top-loading carrier, and don't be afraid to scruff her to get her in.  In my view being handled quickly and firmly is far less upsetting for them than being fiddled around with.

Thanks for the response.

I'm familiar with anal glands and the odor is foul smelling - this isn't. There's no urine odor, either, and I have a very sensitive sense of smell.

I've gotta tell you if/when I take Gigi to the vet (or any of my other former feral-born), and, after all the possible trouble we might have in getting her there, I can assure you that I'd make it all worth my while and be sure to check out all health issues while I had my chance.

I would suggest just calling your Vet and asking what it might be.  Is that possible?  Since she loves being groomed, can you check her again now and see if she's still wet?  That might help eliminate the theory of her dropping her tail in the food bowl

Could you use a white paper towel or kleenex and wipe that area to see if there is any color to any discharge (if there is one)? It might be she has a urinary tract infection or vaginitis, or something else going on.
