Haven't posted for a while, sorry have been so busy lately, hope everyone is well.

Angel is now 7 months and a while back just after I got her I had a problem with her passing blood in her stools, I took her to the vet and they said it was a really bad worm infestation (they took samples and bloods) she is regularly wormed and her foster mum wormed her and I have kept upto date with it. I last wormed her two weeks ago but tonight I have noticed she is licking her bottom a lot and also fresh blood spots next to the litter tray and she passes wind a lot, she has always done this but recently more. She is well in herself, still playing and eating/drinking. I am of course gong to phone the vets in the morning but does this sound like worms again or something else? I really hope its nothing else, I couldn't bear the thought of her being poorly. She was spayed last month and she has a small hernia, I pointed the lump out to the vet when I took her in to be spayed and she just said that it will not cause her a problem unless it gets bigger, its smaller than a pea at the moment. It worries me as she was from a rescue and don't know much about her background. I do know that her mum was a feral that resided on a farm, they took her and her kittens and re-homed them all.x

I wouldn't stress about the hernia, just keep an eye on it. :) As for the blood issue, I would check out her food. I have two cats from the same litter. The one, Oliver, can eat whatever cat food I give them with no problem. Binx, however, is not so lucky. He was passing blood in his stool and even on the floor when I had them on a certain food. It really was a disaster. The vet said he has a sensitive stomach. That's probably something you should talk to your vet about. Especially, if the little one is passing gas. If that is the case, my vet gave them both medicine (just in case Oliver was going to experience the same thing) and it cleared up the problem within a day. I have to stick with a certain brand of food because his stomach doesn't handle other brands. Hope everything is okay!

Yep, fresh blood in the stool means it's a problem in the colon - and if it's not from worms, then it is most like either due to her having problems with constipation and/or sensitivity to her food. Shel had this problem about her age, and it was determined the problem was food-related. See what the vet says. :cross:

If they think it's possible it's a food sensitivity (which I have to think it is given she has issues with gas), if you're not feeding a grain free food, if you can find one you can afford, you should consider that. Cats often don't do well with grains. If you don't feed her any wet food, you may want to consider feeding her some grain-free wet food once or twice a day too. If you don't want to break the bank feeding it to all of them, maybe take her into a bathroom, and have a special meal time with just her. :rub: See if those help. If not, take a look a the common ingredients between what you feed her now, and what you switch her to. Sometimes there are additives like guar gum or carageenen (though these are usually in wet foods) that can cause problems for kitty's tummies. But it may be as simple as grains, if her food isn't grain-free.

I have to wonder if you need to do another stool sample :dk: In fact, there are some organisms that are hard to detect in a fecal sample. It is best to get a fresh sample as well. What has she been dewormed with? do you know the name of the product? How far apart have the dewormings been? This is very important that the timing is just right to kill the developing eggs and cysts.

As for the hernia, Walden has one. I had it repaired and he is fine now. It is a tiny hole in the abdomen and really not much to worry about - but usually the vets check for these during spays/neuters and repair them at the same time. Walden's was overlooked by the vet too. I had it repaired though, because if the hole gets too large then problems can arise. Not to worry you, hun. :hugs: I would go with what your vet says or you could get another opinion if it is bothering you. Also if you get the second opinion, then I would bring that stool sample along too. Doesn't hurt to double check these issues. :hugs: :rub: For Angel :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

You might want to ring the vet to ask - but here, round worm seem to be resistant to drontal. A fecal would turn up whether she's got round worm on not, though there are some other nasties that don't necessarily turn up in an individual fecal - it can take several samples to locate things like giardia or t. foetus, coccidia... though I'd think she'd have an ongoing problem with diarrhea if it were any of those. :dk: Drontal works great for tapeworm, but around here it's not effective at all on round worm. We ended up having to use Panacur AND Strongid-T. I don't know what's available there. But ask if they've seen any round worm resistance to drontal - maybe they'll suggest another wormer to try.

I rang the vets, they can't see me until friday they are fully booked unless Angel gets any worse and isn't herself then they will do me an emergency appointment, she has been her normal, mouse chasing mad self today. They did offer me advice until then about changing her food, as it happens I have switched to a new food (don't ask me why, just a new brand came out and it looked good) but on inspecting the ingredients there is a lot of additives and grain. I went this morning and bought kitecat which I usually use and have been inspecting poops today, there has been no blood today at all and the gas has subsided quite a bit. Obviously still going to the vets, my gut feeling is worms again, she was infested when I got her and she had been treated by her foster mum with drontal the week before I had her, I think you are right Laurie it could be  the drontal not being very effective if not the food, they do a drontal plus, not sure  what that is and my vet had never offered me anything else apart from drontal. I shall ask for something different if it does turn out to be worms again, here's hoping that it is something simple. I want the vet to look at her hernia again too as its worrying me, I think because I know its there.x

I would consider treating every 2-3 weeks for a couple of months given she had a heavy infestation.

What food is she on ?.

Panacur is fine. My vet prescribed that for Rosie as a kitten. She had the granules mixed in her wet food, but she knew it was there and wouldn't touch it, so if she's fussy get the paste and you can smear it on her paws to lick off.

I went and bought the new one that wilkinsons has bought out, not the cheap own brand, the own brand but on inspecting the ingredients which I didn't do when I bought, its basically full of rubbish. I normally buy kitecat wet food, have always fed that with no problems and dried food I feed go cat indoor, thats all that suits Billy as he is sick with anything else, I thought that the wilkinsons was ok as it didn't make Billy sick and he is with a lot of other wet foods like felix, whiskas and the classic but I will stick to kitecat now. I will go to the vets today and get some panacur paste, I think that will be easier, its only £4.50 for a tube.x

Panacur is fine except it doesn't treat tapeworms - Milbemax does both roundworm and tapeworm which are the two that are common in the UK. The FAB has a useful page and there is a summary of what is available in the UK at the bottom - some are POM, some are OTC.  Steer clear of Drontal, they are massive!

Hmmm yes l would ditch it as well.

Have you ever tried Bozita?. It's from Sweden and you can buy it online where l get all my food and litter from in bulk, and it's much cheaper than the supermarkets

I found it through the TCS because it had good reviews and my three love it!
The Bozita is pretty good, mainly meat, reasonably priced and comes in Tetra packs, which I find pretty interesting. There are a couple of different consistencies. Bozita Moist Cat Food

Thank you, I have just looked and I am particuarly liking the diet and stomach wet food, I will order some, do I order it off that website? I couldn't find any link to purchase it. I think this would definitely suit Billy as he has a very sensitive stomach and Smartie as she needs to diet a bit
The ingredients look good on it and comparing them to my regular brand, my regular brand is rubbish also. I bought the panacur and was told it treats tape and roundworm, it also says that on the back of the granules. Its quite a good buy actually as it will treat 4 of my cats as you do the granules by the weight of the kitty. I bought Angel a small tin of hi life tuna food and mixed it and and she gobbled the whole lot, I was advised to treat her again in 3 weeks instead of 4.x

Ruthy, that could be part of the problem... if you were treating for worms every four weeks. Cats need to be dewormed between two and three weeks apart. At least that is what I have always been told. I am glad that Angel is feeling better. I agree that you should ask about that hernia again, if it is worrying you anyway :hugs: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Thank you, will ask tomorrow and will order some of that food, it will do them all good I think to try a new diet, my vet has always told me every 4 weeks for worming so thats what I have been doing,Angel is obviously prone to them and the rubbish cat food that they have been having can't help.xx
