I noticed fur missing on the base of my cats tail about a week ago. I checked it and it appeared to be just bare skin. Just today I noticed more fur missing and there is yellow pus coming out of the area. My cats have recently been fighting, so I think it might be from that (they have been separated for a few weeks now because of the fighting).

I was just wondering if this is something serious. Should I bring her to the vet? This is actually not the first time this happened to her. When we first got her (she is 3 years old now) an abscess formed on her neck. The vet cleaned it out and gave her some antibiotics.

I'd also like to note that she has not shown a major change in behaviour. She does get angry when I pick her up and sometimes when I pet her, but I think it is related to to the incident with the other cat. I would bring them together in a room to get them used to each other again and she didn't like it, so now she won't let me pick her up as she thinks I will bring her downstairs with the other cat (I am letting this incident slide a bit as I am getting a new apartment soon and I hope they will have a fresh start then).

If it was my cat, I would bath it with warm slightly salty water tonight and take the cat to the vets tomorrow.  Cat bites tend to heal at the top and form an abcess, and losing the fur over it is is typical.

And if either or both of the cats are not neutered, I'd get that done as well.

Thanks for your reply. Thankfully, the abscess doesn't seem that serious. The pus is already gone and the wound seems to be opened up and hopefully starting the healing process. I am still going to bring her to the vet, though. I'm afraid stuff might get in the wound like litter since it is on the base of her tail, so I want to get some drops from the vet (like I recieved before). Although I could use hydrogen peroxide, I'd rather just use whatever the vet gives me.
