Hi there

My Gem had 4 kittens, one i am going to keep and the other 3 are being rehomed.  The first 2 are going next week and the 3rd one the following week.  My concern is that Gem is such a loving, caring committed mum, I would like to know if she will pine and cry for her kittens?  Or does this happen and then will she get over it?  Also she has taken to carrying around a soft toy in her mouth mewing?  this is new behaviour.  Any help, thanks Justine

She will cry for them for a few days and spend time looking as well. It always makes me a little sad but then I know she is going to be spayed and this is the last time she will have to go through with it, which makes me feel better.

Is her spayed scheduled soon?

Well i am keeping one and was going to make sure that she is no longer suckling on mum because thats the other thing they are still suckling on her when they can!  So I will be looking to spay her at 10 weeks. does the speying stop the crying?

Crying HERE is not hormones but real attachement. So she will still lack them and cry some. But so is it. One of the hard points being a breeder, for example.  Seeing the moms sorrow. What they usually try is not all leave at once, but just one or two at a time.

Like you do, one leaves after the first two, and one even stays with the mom.  So it will be OK here. :)

Good luck!

So long as the kittens stay with their mum for at least 12 weeks and leave gradually she should be ok, some crying is normal but they adjust pretty quickly

She will be fine. My cat was always a great mom, and when her kittens left, it may take a couple of days, she would walk around, kind of searching and meowing, like a cry, but in no time it was like she forgot all about it and went on with her life.
