We rescued this sweet baby about four years ago from the side of the road. Our sweet Rover was with us for about one year when  he went missing for about two weeks. We got a note from our  drug addicted, prostitute neighbor that she was holding him ransom for $30.  My sweet baby passed in my arms the next night he had been completely starved and hit several times. I have felt so guilty, like there was something I could have done. I would have given her a lot more money than $30 to have never had my baby go through that.  Even though this has been a few years ago I'm still heartbroken. This is the only picture I have of my sweet boy. All the other pictures I have of him are evidence of the abuse he suffered. There was no justice for Rover, pets are considered property, and for some crazy reason stealing someone's cat and starving it to death didn't count as animal cruelty. I share my story because I never want anyone else to go through this. I was always worried  that he might get hit by a car or attacked by dogs, not that someone would willingly kill him. Watch your cats, watch your neighbors, even though we could never imagine hurting an animal there's so many people out there so willing to do so.

Love you Rover. Hope you're having fun up there.

Rover looks like such a sweet boy, I can never understand why and how some people can do this to animals and think it is acceptable. You gave him a wonderful home and love for a year, so you will always have those wonderful memories! Rover is undoubtably playing happily with all the other kitties at the rainbow bridge, and will meet you there one day I'm sure.

Take care,

My deepest condolences for the loss of your precious, handsome, sweet boy Rover.  Know that he is watching over you always, and that you will be reunited in due time.

What you describe is absolutely a crime.  It is a felony in most U.S. States, punishable by jail time and/or fines/community service (inadquate punishment to fit the crime, but punishment nevertheless).  I don't know where you live, but be assured that this is true.

That said, I am in agreement with the 'experts' who strongly, strongly urge caregivers to keep their cats INDOORS ONLY, for their own protection and wellbeing, as well as the peace of mind of the caregiver.  Your story illustrates, painfully, the most important reason for doing so.  As with parents and children, it is our responsibility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our loved ones.  That's a basic part of responsible guardianship.  Please, if you ever adopt another cat, keep him or her indoors only.  Thank you.
