Hello,
I had my cat spayed on Sunday (4/22) at a low cost clinic and I'm a bit concerned. My cat has not ate very much since the surgery unless I give her wet food and it's not like her to not eat. The vet that spayed her noticed she had a lot of stool in her colon and asked she she had regular bowel movements, which she did. However, after surgery it took her until Tuesday night to have a bowel movement but they are very small. I also noticed that I'm very itchy around her now which has never happened before. I'm not allergic to cats so I don't think that's it but I'm concerned maybe she caught fleas? Her fur seems very greasy which is also something strange because she always keeps it so clean. I'm not sure if I'm just overthinking it all, I just want to make sure she's ok.

I would get her to the vet for a follow up just to be sure there's nothing going on from the procedure itself.  Feeding her wet food should help move the bowels especially if you add some water to the food to make it a thick oatmeal consistency.  How does her incision look?

It looks really good actually. They used dissolvables on the inside and glued her shut. It never got very red or swelled. It does however feel warm to the touch but I think it's just the heat from her body. She seems to be in better spirits today when I got home and just wanted to cuddle. I've had all my pets fixed in the past but this is the first time I've used a low cost clinic and the first time (with a female) that they didn't keep them overnight so I really wasn't sure to expect. They had her on Metacam for the pain but it made her lousy I think cause as soon as the two day course was done for that she seemed better.

Why do they use metacam???  It's not approved for that use in cats and can cause so many problems!!!  Grrrr!!

Glad she's feeling better!  Keep an eye on her to be sure she continues eating, drinking, and using the box.

It's normal in the UK for a cat to go in in the morning and home in the afternoon after neutering, for both males & females.  Female cats are usually spayed through their flank so it's a tiny incision and the muscles are not cut, just parted.  A midline spay means a bigger incision and cutting through the linea alba - connective tissue running along the middle of the abdominal wall.

I would be ringing my vet if my cat was still not right several days after a spay.

The top part of her incision felt very hard last night. What are your thoughts on that?

Scar tissue forming is probably what it is.  As long as it's not angry looking or really hot to the touch, then I wouldn't worry.

How's she doing otherwise?  Is she eating better and all that?

Her incision/shaved stomach feels warm but do you think thats just heat from her body? She actually went for her dry food today for the first time since her surgery so she's definitely starting to bounce back. She hasn't drank much water though. She's still very cuddly which is different. She always sleeps at the bottom of my bed but starting about 3 days ago has taken to sleeping on my chest while I sleep and resting her head on my shoulder, it's really cute. I know that having her spayed won't change her personality too much but I wouldn't mind if she continues doing this.

If the incision doesn't look angry red the heat is probably just body heat.  Sometimes being spayed can calm kitties down.  Just keep on doing what you're doing as it seems to be working!

I have not read the entire thread yet so this may have been answered already but here goes.  Sorry for any duplicate responses.  If the hard part is not inflamed, bleeding or otherwise nasty looking it is probably normal scar tissue forming.  Sounds like you are not having the ideal situation here.  The same vet has neutered my male cat and spayed all 3 of my female cats.  Every one of them healed a bit differently but had very similar reactions.  The male cat was the easiest for me to deal with.  The last spay was Swiffer.  It took her longer to heal than the other 2 females.  But I had her back in the vet's office 2 days after the spay because I felt something was not right and I did not like the way her surgical area was looking.  She was also very quiet.  Moreso than expected.  She was fine and by day 3 she was up and going as usual.  Don't think it took that long for the other 2.  Have you taken her back for a followup visit yet?  If not, do so and voice every little concern you have to the vet.  Hopefully you will find reassurance and not an unanticpated problem.

I hope it's just scar tissue. It seems like it bulges out a bit at the top and bottom of the incision but other than that looks pretty normal. She's been bouncing around the last few days & is definitely started to feel like herself again as she finally started to eat her dry food again!!
