I have just let my cat in before bed and the end of her tail has come off and it looks like it may be just hanging on by the tendon. I assume it is the tendon as it looks like a piece of string. It has stopped bleeding and did not seem to bleed a lot at all. She does not seem overly bothered by it which seems a bit weird as myself and my wife were hysterical to start with.

As it is nearly 1 in the morning here there is not a lot we can do about it at the moment. I will have to phone the vet first thing in the morning but we are really worried about her. Are we over reacting and thinking that it is more serious or should we be right to be really worried?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Can you wrap it in a clean cloth and tie something around it to keep the cloth on and the tail covered?

She is asleep now. I am wondering if it is just best to let her sleep and then wrap it with something when she wakes up.

Just returned from the vets and she has had the end of her tail cut off. They wont know if there is any nerve damage yet as she has still not been to the toilet. Fingers crossed.

Aww, poor girl. Hoping she makes a full recovery. Did the vet have any idea what might have caused it?

My feral kitty had to have his tail amputated because of an injury in the middle of his tail. I learned that the tail is part of the spinal cord which is why sometimes there is risk of nerve damage.

And it is apparently easier on the cat to remove the damaged part of the tail on up to the end, or the whole tail as opposed to bandaging it because the weight of a bandage upsets their balance and they will try to chew it off. Did they give your kitty a collar to wear, to avoid licking the tail? Sometimes they put bad tasting stuff on it too, to keep the cat from going there.

My kitty had a full recovery and i bet yours will be fine too- my thoughts are with you!! I know it can be really scary :-(.
