This is kind of an odd problem.

For a long time I had been feeding my cats a certain brand of dry food. One day, I fed them and they wouldn't even touch it. They would follow me around and meow like I forgot to feed them. I thought maybe they changed the formula of the cat food, or I got a bad bag or something so I went and bought another. This one they ate for a bit, then did the same thing.

I decided to switch foods, and after going through about 5 brands, I found one they would eat. Everything was good through the first bag but I just bought another and now they won't eat!!

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

What you're describing really isn't all that unusual. Some cats simply demand variety, and if switching foods doesn't upset their digestion, the easiest thing to do is to rotate brands and/or flavors. I've usually got three to five brands and several flavors of each going at any one time, which is sort of extreme, but Jamie won't eat the same food more than twice a week, and he's been like that since he was a kitten. After he's been eating a certain brand for a month or so it has to be "retired" for about three months before he'll start eating it again.

It's best to switch dry foods slowly by mixing them during the transition unless you find that there's no stomach upset, diarrhea, etc.. Switching canned foods usually isn't a problem.

It's kind of a good way to be sure that there is balance in the long run because though commercial foods are "complete and balanced,"  I think the balanced part is misleading since they are really just meeting AAFCO minimums.  Different brands and lines can vary a lot, being too high in some nutrients and lower in others.  Though a pain to get the picky eaters to eat, they are assuring that they don't get over-dosed on any nutrients by eating the same thing day in and day out for long periods of time!  For more info, see this link:

Hi there
Glad to see a new face around these parts!  What you have described is not all that unusual.  Someone mentioned transitioning dry slowly from one brand to another and this is excellent advice.  You might want to transition it slowly over the course of a couple of weeks.  Also, you did not mention if you did scheduled feedings or if you free feed.  Scheduled feedings might make your kitty hungrier at meal time and he might eat more readily if the food is not around all the time.  You might already be doing the scheduled feedings but thought I throw that out there if you aren't.  Do you feed any wet at all?
