Sneakers, my 16-18 year old CRF cat passed away on Sunday night/Mon morning...
She was not doing well for the last couple weeks, we went to a specialist about a week ago and they said we were pretty much already doing everything they would have recommended. Then later last week she started retaining fluid, she stayed over at the vet on Friday night and they said her kidney values were incredibly high and instead of absorbing her fluids they were going into her tissues, and she had some fluid in her chest as well, and she wasn't urinating. They gave her Lasix but they said they couldn't do fluids to support her kidneys if she was not absorbing them. The fluid swelling did go down some and she started to urinate again but the vet thought it was time to make a decision for her because they still couldn't do fluids since she was not fully absorbing and without the fluids her kidneys were failing even more, and with the fluid in her chest they thought she might be going into heart failure also. I decided to bring her home on Saturday to be able to spend some time with her and see how she was, since the vet closes early on Sat and doesn't open until Monday and they said even if she stayed at the vet they couldn't really do anything more than I could at home and just to keep her on the Lasix... She seemed to be doing a little better on Saturday evening but by Saturday night she was weak and not wanting to eat much. She held on though until overnight on Sunday when she was too weak to stand and I knew she was not going to be with us much longer. Every once in a while she would meow like she did when she wanted something but she didn't want anything I offered and didn't want to be held. I think she was fighting to hang on. She was always a fighter. There were several times when she was doing very poorly and we didn't know if she would make it but she always pulled through so I had trouble with knowing if this time was really it.
I am glad that I brought her home though and was able to spend that time with her. I miss her so much already... I spent so much time caring for her, doing all her meds and sub-q and injections, encouraging her to eat and everything for so long that now I just don't know what to do with myself.
My vet will be making a clay imprint of Sneakers' paws so I will post a photo of that when we get it.
Here are a few photos of Sneakers, starting from older (we got her when she was about 9 years) to more recent photos.

This first photos was when my friend first "rescued" her-- she belonged to a woman in their neighborhood. My friend's little sister was visiting and complimented their cat and the woman said she didn't want the cat and if she wanted it. She said yes and carried Sneakers back to her house (not easy since she weighed 17 pounds back then) but her parents said they couldn't keep her because they had several cats already. My brother used to live with us and his cat had passed away recently, so I asked him if he wanted her and he said we could foster her. Of course she ended up staying. My brother moved away last year for work though and we decided Sneakers should stay with me since my brother was not home much and often had to travel for work and Sneakers needed someone around more often.
