Violet yes very good points you are makingnhere i am talking to the doc tomorrow about the metronizdole and her liver enzymes in addition she needs something to stop the muscle wasting finnlacey mentioned b vitamins and i also read something about lactulose which helps excrete ammonia through the urine to much ammonia build up in liver is toxic vit k,a,d and e are also good in combination with arganine and taurine. So far so good tonight i did not have to give her mitza for appetite thank god she ate almost a whole can for dinner.whew! She seems to be responsive tonight as well. I guess i am just a bit anxious just wondering if we are turning the corner here in a positive way, then i am waiting for her to throw up again etc. I have to just start thinking a little more positive and see her in my minds eye as whole healed and better! Thank you again Lisa

Since you mention that, I know this is a cat site but can you all say prayers for my dad? He's in the hospital tonight I just got home. We think he had a stroke, which has happened before. He'll  be 85 in June. The older he gets the more I know he won't be here forever and I'm worried. Thanks everyone and great news that Bella ate all that food tonight! Whoo hoo!

MyLittleBella, please keep us updated, let us know how your sweet baby is doing. This is not an easy disease to treat so please be patient and don't allow yourself to get discouraged if you have to deal with ups and downs.

Hugs and prayers.

My cat, Caroline, had this illness earlier this year. It was very scary, difficult, and stressful to treat. I spent a lot of money on compounded medication as she is hard to medicate and was not eating. I also consulted with a specialist who performed an ultrasound and recommended a biopsy. After a few weeks of both me and the cat being stressed I opted to stop treating her and focus on her eating and drinking. My cat had been rescued from a hoarding case with over 100+ cats. She survived a bad bout of feline bartonella, worms, fleas. She has bad teeth, and gingivitis. She also had socialization problems and needed to establish trust with me when I adopted her. Caroline slowly got better and maintained her weight. The vets had told me that this could have been viral, so I am assuming that is what it was. Caroline has never been this active, running around playful cat, but I do know recognize her symptoms when she is getting sick. I don't plan on bringing her to the vet unless I notice something going on. She was recommended to have monthly lab work. This cat has been through so much. I just want her to have a comfortable life since she lived in squalor in her early years.

Hello, I’m new here. I found this site researching information for my 20 year old cat Squeaky. He is experiencing the same symptoms described in this thread. I am hoping someone can provide me with some answers. A week ago he suddenly became very ill. He was disoriented, wouldn’t eat and was very lethargic. I rushed him to the ER and his blood work revealed high levels of bilirubin and liver counts. They gave him fluids and I took him to his regular vet the next day. X-rays & Ultrasound were performed, which revealed inflammation, bile ducts blockage and an enlarged liver. He became jaundiced very quickly and is having trouble breathing. He was given Convenia (antibiotics) and Ursodiol (to unblock the bile ducts) and fluids. The next day he took a turn for the worst and another X-ray revealed a significant enlargement of the liver and fluid retention. He was given Lasix (diuretic) and the vet said he would not live much longer than 48 hours.  I suspected a reaction to one of the drugs.

That was last Friday and Squeaky is still with us. We continue to give him fluids every day and he drinks water on his own, but will not eat. His breathing improved and he became perkier. Today, for the first time in a week he ate about a tablespoon of chicken baby food (a suggestion from a friend who gives that to her cat when she is ill). I was so happy that he started eating again. However, a few hours later, he went downhill again. He is having difficulty breathing and is very lethargic. I’m afraid his condition has worsened because of the food. Perhaps his bile ducts are still blocked? I’m afraid to give him the Ursodiol again because of the reaction he had the first time.I’ve had three different vets write him off due to his old age. I do not want to give up on him. He is a fighter and has been through some tough times in his life, all of which he beat the odds. Are these bouts of doing better and then doing worse normal for this disease? Does it get better even if he isn’t eating? I have so many questions. Any suggestions or thoughts on his condition would be much appreciated.

honigkatze,

I just want to say, I'm so sorry, so very sorry, you and your baby are in this situation, having to deal with this terrible disease. It sounds to me you're possibly seeing liver failure but I hope not. The thing is though that giving fluids in any condition that can cause fluid retention can be the worst thing one can do, so maybe giving fluids contributed to the development of this crisis situation. Also, Lasix damages the kidneys, has a terrible effect on kidney function, especially in older kitties, so it can make an already bad situation worse, in fact actually cause kidney failure.

As for ups and downs, yes, they can be expected with this disease. But, really, things can't get better if kitty is not eating.

The only thing I can think of suggesting right now is this: do your best to find a holistic vet who is experienced in treating this disease, and/or a feline specialist who is practicing conventional and holistic medicine and has a completely equipped practice, meaning they can do all the things, including a variety of surgical procedures conventional veterinarians normally do. (For instance, putting in a feeding tube when a kitty isn't able to eat on his own.)  Also, holistic vets have some things that can be helpful in treating this disease. And suggestions regarding diet if kitties with this disease can be persuaded to eat.

I'm thinking you may have to consider putting in a feeding tube and then go from there.

To find a holistic vet, this directory should be helpful to you

http://www.holisticvetlist.com/

Hoping this does not come too late for you, I'm sending you many many heartfelt prayers and best wishes.

Hi Lisa,

I found this thread and realize that it is from a while ago, but if you get my message, I just wondered how Bella did long haul. My cat Sinco, has been diagnosed with this same awful disease. He is not yet two years old. I am syringe feeding him water and clomaxin. He is refusing all food and down to skin and bones. He mostly just sleeps and stares off into space. I have been back and forth to the vet receiving subQ fluids. I am living in Mexico and he does not have the technology to tube feed him. He seems to be suffering so much and I am trying to heartbreakingly decide if keeping him alive is selfish.

Please respond is you get this message.

Thank you.

Darma, I'm so very sorry about your kitty. It's a heartbreaking decision to have to make. But if syringe feeding him isn't an option and you can't get a feeding tube then I don't know if he'll recover from the sounds of it. I wish I could offer you hope. Doesn't the vet have an appetite stimulant and steroids to put him on?

Yes please do! I don't see why they haven't put him on steroids and an appetite stimulant to get him eating. That's ridiculous, they should have access to those meds there. Please keep us posted! I want so badly to see if this can be turned around.
