My husband is too funny. When we met 13 years ago he swore that he hated cats. He wasn't a big fan of animals at all but he despised cats the most. According to him they were sneaky, conniving, and just total pests. He told me that if I ever brought a cat home he'd throw it out on the street as soon as he could. I considered myself to be mainly a dog person anyway so it wasn't that big of a deal.

We ended up adopting our two dogs and started fostering dogs here and there and the hubby took to the dogs much more than I expected. I didn't really have anything to do with cats and didn't really miss having any but when I, about 5-6 years ago, came across a litter of kittens with a severe case of URI and coccidia living among a feral colony I decided to take them in. The hubby wasn't happy but they stayed in our spare room so he didn't see much of them. They were all fixed up and adopted and that was going to be it. But a few weeks later I came across another litter from the same colony and decided to take them in too.

These kittens ended up having to stay in our bedroom because the spare room was being used for other things. As a result my husband had more contact with the kittens. He wasn't happy about them being there and made it no secret that he didn't care for them. But the kittens didn't know that and developed much warmer feelings for him than he had for them. One kitten especially, Lulah, really took a liking to the hubby and would come and cuddle up to him every night. Once she got big enough to leave the bedroom she started to follow him around everywhere. She was like his shadow. It didn't take long for him to soften a bit and start liking Lulah back. She really wrapped him around her little paw. He slowly started to like the cats and found their little antics to be quite amusing and cute. We started fostering other cats too and he would help me with caring for them.

We ended up keeping Lulah and through the years three other cats.

That was now over five years ago and we still foster cats. The hubby has become a real cat person and genuinely care about the cats. Last week an old foster cat had to be returned to us and he drove 6 hours to go get her, petting her and cooing with her all the way home. He was really concerned that she would be comfortable and feel at home once we got home. On Monday when he went back to work he called me from work just to ask how she was doing.

Every day now he has one of our little foster cats sitting on the kitchen table during dinner and he shares some of his food with her. He always makes sure to save some food and breaks it up in little pieces for her. He sleeps with at least 2-3 cats every night now and has nightly cuddle sessions with them. Last year he came home with a remote control helicopter that he had bought to play with the cats with. He tells me stories all the time about little cute things the cats have done and shows me pictures he's taken of them looking cute.

If you ask him if he likes cats he'll just say "they're okay" but I know that he loves them. He's gone from viewing cats as a pest to living with nine of them and loving them all. He's a completely reformed cat hater!

So is my hubby lol. He could not stand the cats when we first got married- However, I found out his secret one night when Smokie had woken up crying and he was in the living room rocking him back to sleep. Exhibit A

After that, he had to admit he loves them. He kisses them all the time, holds them- cuddles them, and even cried when Smokie had an URI and we thought he might die. :)

when i met hubby 20 years ago and i mentioned cats he said 'what are they good for. they sleep, eat and poop. then a year later he came home from work, (he works for Union Pacific Railroad) with a 6 week old white kitten. they openend up a boxcar and there were 2 kittens. his co-worker took one and he the other. we weren't supposed to have any pets in the apartments we lived then. we managed to hide him for 4 years til we moved. now we have 10, all former strays and 4 of them are rail-road cats. he is now a cat lover.

So my hubby is not the only reformed cat hater
. Aren't they funny, those male creatures?

I hear people say all the time that they are not cat people and prefer dogs. I bet that if you asked these people though they would tell you that they've never really known a cat. I think that if people jut got a chance to really spend some time with a cat they would see that they are great little animals with distinctive personalities.
