My cat decided to rub her butt on the floor while pooping rather then in the cat box... I am not sure why. She's an indoor cat and shouldn't have worms or anything like that. Anyone know why she'd do this? She's been litter box trained as a kitten and shouldn't be doing that.

Anal gland problems can lead to rubbing the anus on the floor.  In certain stages of their life cycles certain worms don't show up on fecal tests.  So, worms could be a possibility even if kitty has never tested positive for them.  (Mine are indoor only too and I don't rule out the possibility of parasites even though they have had clear stool tests.)

Also, I have one cat who gets "cling on" poopies where some sticks to him even though he goes in the box.  He will rub it off around the house.  Could that be a possibility?  It only happens every so often with him, not an every day sort of thing though.

She hasn't done it every day that is for sure....maybe every other week or so once and awhile... also she is a short fur (orange kitten) and I have never noticed poop sticking to her fur unlike the long fur kitten I have (Calico/Torbie). But I was curious if kittens need their anal glands expressed like dogs do. Is that a possibility? And do indoor cats get worms too? I always thought that outdoor cats got them more often because they where around cats with worms.

i am no expert but i was baffled by this 'scooting' too. My Boy has short hair, never poops outside the box and was spayed some long time ago but i took him to the Vet and mentioned the scooting. they told me about expressing the anal glands but he doesn't have that problem. the other thing he does do is masturbate up to 4 times per day - i've given him a little cushion as his 'girlfriend'.

in your situation i would wonder if it isn't psychological?  does he do it while you're there?

or, is your feeding area completely away from his litter box?

do you clean the litter box twice a day? (i do and they seem to appreciate it).

My orange kitten (the one who does the shooting) is a female... not a male whatsoever although many have made the mistake of calling her a boy cause she is orange. She acts a lot like a boy in my opinion because she is obnoxious unlike the other female we have. She even kind of beats up on the other female (who happens to be a scaredy kitten and doesn't really like to fight as much).

As for the food bowl it's about five feet away from the litter box because they are currently living in a small space on a daily basis. She has never sprayed anything so I am not certain. and although not fixed she hasn't shown any signs of blood or anything as well... I do plan on fixing her though so don't get at me about that.

And yes she does do it while I'm here... I think it's to get my attention because the meowing and grabbing of things I don't want her to have hasn't done anything...I wonder if it's cause she's not fixed for the reason she does this... and I usually change the litter box maybe once or twice a week and will probably be doing it more often with these suggestions.

Indoor cats are pretty unlikely to get worms, but many (or most) cats are born with them because they got them from mama.  Even if a kitten was "dewormed" they might not have gotten rid of them all.  Even if a kitten had a clear stool sample, worms wont show up well in stool tests at certain stages of their life cycle.  I'm not sure how young your cat is, but she could be dealing with worms she has had since birth.  (They might need to multiply before she showed any symptoms.)

My vet said that cats are less likely than dogs to need their anal glands expressed, but it does happen.  And hormones can cause all sorts of interesting behaviors, so its good you are planning on the spay.  I'd rule out health issues (with a trip to the vet and stool test) before assuming a behavior problem myself.  Good luck.

Thing is she was at the vet last month...

I will take her into the vet if it persists further. As of right now she only has done it maybe once or twice maybe three times at the most since she came to live with me in January.

I thought that if it continued onward and maybe became more and more frequent I would think about taking her in... But I was curious if any other females have had similar behavioral issues in the past... Seeing as that is not the case I will think further about taking her into the vet to get a second opinion.

When she was at the vets what was she treated for and were her anal glands checked?  I would take her back.

Just to clarify:  did she scoot her butt after having a BM, and was the BM in the litter box?

If your cat just does this once or twice after having a BM in the litter box, then I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Though I would see how hard/soft her BMs are.  And make sure there is no blood in the stool.

Ritz (female) sometimes scoots her butt on the carpet. maybe at the most, once a month.  It seems to be correlated to the raw diet I feed her:  when I feed her too much bone (which she loves), she gets a little constipated, some of the feces sticks to her butt, so she scotts to get it off of her.  Never did I think it was a behavior issue; it's medical.

In the past she has had trouble with her anal glands being too full.  Cats normally express their anal glands when they have a bowel movement (you can usually tell--stinks more than usual).  But the BM needs to be hard enough (i.e., pressure) to express them.  Too soft too long, and anal gland problems can develop.

just to clarify on the poop thing and how hard or soft it was

it was soft and kind of like she had had diarrhea or something... there was no blood but I will say it was particularly yellow in color.

by the logic that it stinks when they have movements My other long furred kitten Nutter Butter has regular ones.... but Pangur has never really had a movement that stunk... so that might be concerning but I think it might've been as suggested... and I will take her to the vet if it continues... so far is hasn't happened since

to answer other questions she was treated at the vet but I am not sure about worms... she was treated for feline Leukemia that much I know as well as rabies and a few other things which I will have to recount and make sure she was treated for worms as well but otherwise I thought she wouldn't have worms after the vet :p I tend to be silly that way but I will check up on this (paperwork and such I saved should make this for sure)...

but right now I will see if maybe she does it again... I've only noticed that they have been accidently scooping the poop out of the box so I could've been wrong about her scooting and it could've only been a one time thing.
