So for the last two weeks I have been taking my cat to the vet and each time she has lost a little bit more weight. She was given a steroid last week, and we were tube feeding her. She began to seem like she was improving, and even started eating little nibbles of food on her own, but last night she threw up again, and had   diarrhea, as well as diarrhea today. The vet seems to think it is some form of IBD, and from what I have read online it looks like all the symptoms. I am just hoping it is not lymphoma. From what I have read, cats with IBD can do surprisingly well once diet is changed and they are treated accordingly. Can anyone who has had to go through the same stuff give me some words of advice and comfort.

IBD is not always as easy to manage at first and there are setbacks so please know this might happen. BUT, that doesn't mean you can't get it under control. Inflammation like that inside the organs and in the lining doesn't happen over night and it takes awhile to get it under control. Is she getting something for the nausea? If not, she needs to be. IBD causes a lot of acid reflux and that makes them very nauseas. Plus the diarrhea needs to be under control. What did he give you for medications?

I have a cat with IBD who was on a feeding tube at Christmas time in 2010. He has been symptom free for a little over a year.  Diet didn't seem to have any affect on his flares and he is on a maintenance dose of Prednisolone. I know that Prednisone isn't the best longterm treatment but it is working for him.  The last flare affected his liver with two types of hepatitis and his liver looks a little small on x-rays even though his blood work comes back normal. There probably is some damage to his liver but he is happy, energetic, and appears to feel good.

Those are the key words right there. Happy and energetic! To me pred is not the devil drug some people get so scared of. It's helped thousands of kitties with all kinds of issues. and while I would rather it be just food that helps them feel better, I think we do what we have to do for quality of life. What's the point otherwise? If the kitty is so miserable and suffering, that's not a good life to me. Yes there are side effects to pred, but there are side effects to everything!!! Weighing the pros and cons it sounds like you've done very well with your kitty Denice. I'm glad he's feeling good.

Thanks for the encouraging words guys. I am kinda upset with the vets that she has been seeing. I feel like whatever she has should have been diagnosed quicker. Took her in last friday, which was march 30th and she had lost 4 ounces from march 5th. Vet didnt think she needed a blood test or anything. Then monday she wasnt eating still and acting lethargic, lost another 3 ounces and had a fever. The next day we brought her back, still had fever and finally was given a steriod injection, b12 vitamins and science diet a/d to give her through a syringe. She actually seemed to be getting better, but then yesterday night she threw up again, and had diarrhea  lats night and again today. Took her to the vet this morning who said we should really get a biopsy going. So that is what I did. Vet said she noticed enlarged lymph nodes in distal jejunum and also her liver looked a little different color than it should. I feel like I am at my witts end. Something in my gut makes me think that she might have been under the weather , stopped eating and developed a little bit of hepatic lipodosis, then got a bacterial infection and this is what caused it all by not being properly diagnosed. Still have to wait on the biosopy results, which will hopefully finally answer really what is wrong. I guess it will show if it is IBD, and god forbid possibly lymphoma. Really think though whatever it is I am going to start going to a new vet clinic.

You gotta follow your instincts and I say that every time with everyone. Usually we as the parents know there is something drastically wrong and omg that's a lot of weight to lose so quickly!!! If you have an feline or vet internal specialist anywhere near you, please see them after the tests come back. Or if you have an all cat clinic try that. Something is definitely at work here and you may be very right about the HL. Ugh, vets like that really tick me off. How can they NOT do blood work with that kind of weight loss? My vet immediately wanted blood from Alex when she started throwing up.

I took Patches to different vets when he had flares and he just got supportive treatment, I would then be back with the next flare. The last time he was especially sick and I took him to a cats only clinic on the other side of town. It was expensive but I think a lot of that is because of all the diagnostics they did. I had even asked the other vets about the definitive blood test for pancreatitis that Texas A&M does but he didn't get it. This vet did it with the first round of blood work and I didn't even have to ask for it.
