I had my cat spayed three days ago. The day following she ate about a third of a can of food and drank some water. Now she refuses to eat. I discovered this morning that she will take liquid with a syringe. She willingly sits and takes the syringe with water or juice from a can of cat food. But eating on her own, she refuses. She acts as normal as can be expected after surgery, but she kind of acts like her throat might be sore because she keeps swallowing. Do they put something down her throat when cats are spayed? She wags her tail like she's mad too, but she does purr when I pet her.

She also had her vaccinations, could vaccinations cause something like this too? Rabies and a three-way feline shot.

Trying to get a hold of a vet on Easter is going to be impossible.

Any ideas?? I'm worried about her.

It's possible they did put something down her throat for the surgery (seems like I've seen pictures of cats during surgery with tubes down their throats), and that could definitely make it uncomfortable for her to swallow shortly after surgery, but I haven't seen that posted as a problem before.  Were you able to reach your Vet through their emergency contact information.  Most Vets have that on weekends and holidays.

Vaccinations can make many cats lethargic for 24 hours or so, but 3 days seems a lot longer than the norm.

Is she sneezing or does she seem stuffed up?  I'm thinking maybe this is just coincidental.   It's bad allergy season this year, and lots of cats are reacting with not eating because they cannot smell their food!  And one cat recently was "gagging", which was because of the build up of mucous in her throat I believe.  Your girl may be swallowing a lot for the same reason?  Anyway, if it's possible she is stuffed up, you could try heating her food to make it stinkier, so maybe she can smell it better.  In the meantime, I would keep syringe watering AND feeding her until you can get in touch with the Vet.  It is very important that she get fluids and food, especially since she is in the process of healing from surgery.

She started eating yesterday. I went to the store and bought a variety of brands of canned food. She won't eat the same kind she used to, she won't even eat the dry food that she was on before surgery. I didn't know that spaying her would make her so finicky. The only hard food she will eat right now is kitten chow, I know I can't keep her on that, but she needed to get some food down after four days of not eating. Hopefully she'll start eating her regular dry food again.

Spaying doesn't make cats finicky. She may associate the old flavors with the throat discomfort she experienced earlier (some vets do intubate anesthetized cats, so that probably is what happened). Hopefully she'll get past that soon. Good that she started eating again!

You might want to let the vet know how badly the intubation bothered her. It's good feedback. . .maybe they can be more careful with removing the tube from other cats in the future.

Glad she is at least eating on her own now!
