I give my cats Petromalt for hairballs. They both like it and it's effective.

I see from product reviews on sites like Amazon that Sentry changed the formula when they bought the brand about eight months ago.why they would change the formula on something that has worked for decades is beyond me. I guess they thought the name alone was enough and decided to cheap out on the ingredients. They replaced the barley malt syrup with corn syrup and added gums and other thickening agents. The new stuff is runnier and a lot of cats that liked the old stuff hated it.

Apparently there were a lot of returns and consumer complaints and several Amazon reviews mentioned they called the company and were told it was going back to the old formula. According to the reports, the old formula should have started showing up on shelves by now.

My last old formula tube is almost gone. Has anyone bought Petromalt in the last couple of months and can confirm if it's the new or old stuff? The new stuff has corn syrup on the ingredients list, the old one doesn't. The ingredients are not listed on the packaging, you have to read them off the tube.

My older cat LOVED the old petromalt formula beyond words. The new stuff? Hates it beyond words.

The youngster doesn't know the diff and eats either one with abandon.

I really do need the old formula, but ordered 6 tubes recently from Amazon and it was the new formula!

I'd love to know how to be sure to get new formula....

Just wanted to update for those who also use(d) Petromalt.

The original formula is back on store shelves. I picked up the last 4.4 ounce tube at Petco today. They had a few smaller tubes of the original formula left, and they were mixed in with the new formula. There was only one tag on the shelf for both formulas. I can confirm it is the thick, gooey stuff my cats eat right out of the tube.

The actual product name for both formulas is called Sentry Hairball Relief. The box has a little oval that contains the words "Petromalt technology." Kind of ironic, since Petromalt technology hadn't changed in at least 40 years. Both packages are identical except for the ingredients list and an oval sticker on the old formula boxes that says "ORIGINAL FORMULA." You can also tell by the ingredients list. The new formula has corn syrup instead of barley malt syrup.

Some of the boxes for the original formula in the smaller tubes had stickers with the ingredients list covering the printed ingredients. There was also a "petroleum free" version in different packaging. I think what they're doing is changing to offering the old formula under the Petromalt label and selling the new formula as Sentry Hairball Relief petroleum free.

Just thought I would let others know it's safe to buy the stuff again. Some stores will probably have a mix of the new and old formula under the same name until it's either recalled or they sell through their new formula stock, so this is one product I would buy in person for awhile.

I received a tube of the "original" formula last week from Sergeant's Pet Care because I had complained about the new formula they had before.  They claimed they just went back to the new formula and this wasit.   I had just bought a tube from the pet store the week before.  The original has  Active ingredients mineral oil (44%).   My cat just loved it. It was the original. The new tube that Sergeants sent me claiming that it was the original had a sticker over the the 44% mineral oil  with it down to mineral oil 10.8%.  My cats won't touch it again.  They can't leave stuff alone.

I bought a tube of Petromalt last week.  It did not have corn syrup.  It had mineral oil and petrolatum but the barley malt was almost the last ingredient listed not like the second ingredient as it had been.  My cat will still not take this tube after having taken the original formula for many years.  She is 16 and the vet says she has to take it everyday for constipation.  Have you or anybody else tried another brand that works but it would have to be the malt flavor because she does not take the fish flavored ones.  Thanks.

I just went back to the Pet Supplies Plus store and found several boxes with the true original formula. It has the Barley Malt Syrup listed second. Mineral Oil 44% listed first. My cats are 12 and 13 and also need it daily.  They will not take any thing else. This store is in Mansfield OH. and when I called they checked the ingredients for me before I came in.  If nothing else try calling.  Ask if the Mineral Oil is 44% as that is what the true original is.

I received a free petromalt also because I complained also.  I am sorry but I do not trust Sentry anymore.  They did nothing to get the old stuff off the shevles of the pet stores.  They could have done a recall.  They did Nothing!!!!!

When I asked them when are they going back to the original petromalt I was told they did not know because the stores were still selling the old formula which was making many cats sick!

I put the petromalt right in the trash where it belongs.  Who knows if they REALLY went back to the original formula?

I switch to laxatone and get it on-line.  My cat loves it and I will never buy petromalt again!
