Hello everyone it has been a while since I have written here. I have an issue I am wondering if anyone can share some insight with me. Is there a Vet that reviews issues here?
I have been feeding a stray cat in my back yard for about a year now. I got him fixed a long time ago, but his cries for more attention kept bothering my husband and I so we took him (Sylvester - a tuxedo angora) to the Vet with the intention of having him integrate into the house with 5 other adult cats. We had him tested for all the different diseases and he came back clean. Our cats had seen him for over a year living in the back yard.
So we put him on the porch and let the other cats get use to him and finally they walked him into the house. Not all of them were happy but that is another story.
He had his rabies shot and a month later we took him in for his FLP. Afterwards all our other cats started to get an upper respitory infection. It started with the oldest and went fight down the line costing us $650.00 worth of shots, medications and vitamins trying to keep the younger cats from getting it.
Yesterday I took the last cat in for a shot of antibiotics because she had gotten it too. I asked the receptionist if it was possible that the FLP they gave Sylvester could have caused all this trouble. She looked up on the chart and read the words "live virus" is all I heard. I was shocked. She said she had never heard of this happening and she would ask the vet if it was possible.
This has been my vet office for over 10 years and they knew we had 5 other cats in the house. Why in the world would they not tell us of potential problems. All of our cats are inside cats and probably have very little immune system to any virus.
Don't get me wrong they can get little colds but this was a down right epidemic. It started with sneezing, watery eyes and then went into heavy congestion and labored breathing.
Anyone every have this happen to them or heard of anything like this?
The vet's office called "it is unlikely" the shot had anything to do with it...
