Hello all- I'm a Mom of 6 kids and as of 5 days ago, the proud new Mom of 2 shelter kittens and one shelter cat.
Here's the story in a nutshell: I wanted a kitten, went to the shelter, none won me over, but there WAS a 3 year old sponsored black cat that was shiny and huge and had big gold piercing eyes that reminded me of a panther that I just had to have, after playing with him in the family room. That is Salem. I didn't know it at the time but looking through his records after coming home, I realized that he's been in a shelter his whole life.. He's adapted well considering, to our family with 6 loud kids. I am still getting to know him but so far, I'm in love..
He's so large that a normal litter box was just not big enough and today I had to make a great big one for him. It's actually kindof awesome especially since I have 3 cats using that one.. I'm going to do the same for upstairs tomorrow.
(Salem chilling after the kids went to bed- he's like a vampire lol)
Salem was awesome but he only cameo out at night, and I REALLY wanted a kitten so I decided to go back 2 days later with my 4 and 2 year olds and pick out a kitten. My least favorite color for a cat is orange, but wouldn't you know, an orange and white one won me over. I found out he was the last of a litter, and I kindof have a thing for the one that was "left behind" and he was just the right amount of playful and cuddles- so he was mine.. His name is Tater. He's super playful, very smart, loves to lay in the window, and is starting to come when called, although he's not super big on lovin'. He DOES love to cuddle up to you in bed during naps and bedtime though.
(tater investgating on the way home)
Fast foreward a few days- i decide that Tater needs a playmate. I really had wanted to get 2 kittens the day we got Tater but the others just were either WAY too mellow, or WAY too playful/biting our hands, so I knew I could look around. I call around to different shelters, and find a kitten that hadn't been listed on petfinder yet. a white polydactyl cat with a black spot on her chin and a black tail, 12 weeks like Tater, playful and cuddly too, MINE. This kitty is Bella. she's such a lover. she's very playful, but also turns the motor on nearly as soon as you pick her up.. LOVES to snuggle.. I actually think she might be a bit slow if that's possible, but that's okay with me. I adore her the same.
It's a big responsibility, taking on 3 cats. financially AND physically. even mentally. So far Salem has diarrhea and blood in his stool so Im taking him in to the vet asap- and I suspect worms with Bella, but unsure. her belly is super round, but maybe she's just chubby. will find out on Friday. Tater seems to have ear mites. he's been to the vet once, and he put drops in and said it'd kill them but I'm unsure. just hte next day it was black and gross again.
thank you for reading this far. I found this community by googling (black stuff in cats ear) and finding a thread on it. You seem like a lovely group of people who genuinely care about each-others felines. I hope to put my feet up and make myself at home here.
