I have noticed for the past week or so that my cat has not been eating or acting like her self. Last month when she was at the vet she lost 7 ounces from the year before, and she lost more a few days ago, and a little more today, about a pound in total, and for her, only weighing about 7.5lbs that is a lot. The doctors can not say for certainty what she has, but the vet is leaning toward an upper respiratory infection. We had blood work done today just to check out her liver and kidney enzymes, as well as to say if she has an elevated level of white blood cells. She had a lot of mucous in her nose today, and unfortunately , I do not remember if it was greenish, but I think it might have been. My main concern is I was doing some reading, and if a cat does not eat (which she hasnt been really, especially today) they can develop hepatic lipadosis, where the liver processes too much fat for energy and is very bad for a cat. Do you guys think if she is not eating tommorrow, I should just bring her to the vet and have them put a feeding tube down into her stomach and give her food that way. I do think she does have an upper respiratory illness right now, but I don't want that condition to cause a much more serious condition.

A feeding tube at this moment without knowing exactly is going on is not something they'll do. If she has an URI now, that doesn't explain her weight loss throughout the year. I know she didn't have this thing for a whole year, there's no way. I think the blood work will say a lot about anything in the organs and as far as not eating, you're right, it's dangerous. What I suggest you do is that for tonight, take a can of cat food, put it in a blender with a little water added, puree it to a liquid consistency. If you have a medical syringe, use that to syringe feed her some food. If not, go to the drug store or Walmart or something and get one. She needs to have some. Very slowly syringe it into her mouth. You can also get some baby food but make sure there is NO onions or garlic. Baby food works just as well for now as the cat food would and it's already pureed. you can just add a little water to it. I would call the vet tomorrow, tell him what's going on and that she still isn't eating. He'll probably call in an appetite stimulant for her, that's my guess. A feeding tube is surgery, so they won't just put one in her without knowing first why they're doing it. I'm sorry you're going through this. Sending you lots of hugs and love to your baby.

I actually do have a syringe. It was given to us a few days ago to give the cat laxatone. I will try that suggestion and at least get some food in her. I believe it is an upper respiratory infection, as she has had them in the past. What really bothers me a lot is when I went to her yearly checkup she had lost weight. Then I went away on vacation for two weeks. My dad was home and said she was normal and eating, yet when I came home she felt skinnier. Sure enough on friday she had lost some weight, that was vet visit number 2. Now today we went again. Each time i told a different vet I think something is wrong with my cat, and nothing really was done. I even asked the vet today about the blood work and she was like, well its up to you if you think we should do it or not. I was like geesh, your the vet, what is your medical opinion with all the information you have about my cat and 3 visits in a month.

Right but like you said, the weight loss over a year is not from this URI. Is there another vet you can go to? Another place? Is there an all cat clinic in your area?

I tried the syringe thing, she spit out the food. I am going to see if she eats in the morning. If she doesnt, I am going to call the vet and let them know that she has lost a 7 ounces in a month, and a total of a pound in a year. She has not been eating much and I am worried about hepatic lipadosis. Also, I hope the stray cat that had kittens that is living on my back porch did not give the cat anything. I always wash my hands when I go out there, but now I am getting scared that no good deed goes unpunished.

you should get the prescription A/D food for your cat and see if your vet has Supplical   . syringe feed your kitty this and just a little bit will give her the daily needed amount of calories / vitamins and hopefully get her back to normal. If anything keep her stable till the vet can figure out what kind of problem she has.

A/D prescription diet - http://www.hillspet.com/products/pd-feline-ad-caninefeline-critical-care-canned.html

Supplical - http://www.calvetsupply.com/product/supplical/Vitamins_Appetite_Calorie

Also i would have assumed they would have done this already but if not have your vet send a fecal test out to the lab and check for every sort of parasite.

I honestly would not even base the call on IF she eats anything or not. I'd just call...period! I would absolutely demand an ultrasound. She could have something going on in her esophagus that is making it difficult to eat. Clearly this is not just a URI. She may have one, yes. But that's not all that's going on there.

I think you guys are right. I have been unimpressed with the suggestions and care from 3 different vets at this office. Tommorrow I am going to call them and tell them I want an ultrasound and as many tests as they are able to safely give to determine what is wrong with my cat.

It's just not right to me. I have a vet that definitely doesn't run tests needlessly but she does tests immediately when she thinks there's a reason to and I know she would have done them already. My vet gets very concerned when any kitty starts losing weight fast like that, when they aren't even on a diet.

Ok guys, the vet called today, she said she definitely has an infection cause her wbc count was up. She said however that her bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase were wthin normal levels. I scheduled an abdominal sonogarm for today anyway. We are also going to get special syringes from the doctor because she is concerned about her not eating and does not want this to turn into hepatic lipodosis
