So, I woke up this morning, and stepped into something warm and gooey. At first I thought it was hairball.. but closer inspection, I saw it was a sausage. I wondered how Monet got it (and I KNOW it was Monet.. Cassie doesn't like raw food).. I look in the kitchen to see my freezer door wide open.. and every package of meat on the floor. Brand new package of sausage, chicken and steak, raw and half eaten on the floor. I also found some chicken in the bathroom. I am not searching the entire apartment for more.

The meat was warm, so I knew it had to have happened early in the night. EVERYTHING In my freezer was defrosted and too warm and had to be tossed away. It was at least $75 worth of food I had to throw out!!! Two cartons of ice cream I bought over the weekend had to be tossed out as well.

It HAD to be Monet. Cassie was with me all night and she doesn't eat 'people' food, let alone raw meat. Monet is the obsessive one, and he's strong enough to open that freezer.

I am debating on not feeding Monet breakfast. He seems very mushy.. tummy ache maybe?

I've never been so angry at him!!! Now I have to figure out a way to secure my freezer from him!!

Edit: I fed the two breakfast.. Monet barely ate. He must have a tummy ache after all, or is just too full. That darn cat!!

Try giving him an acid reducer, silly kitty. Although I KNOW that had to be frustrating! And nope, I wouldn't give him anything else to eat until later in the day....I'm betting your litter boxes will be very full tonight. :lol3:

Awww, hun, I'm sorry, I've been there!
That happened to us once as well, and although there is no way to know for sure, I'm PRETTY sure it was Osiris. He's the only one who gets on top of the fridge. It was the same thing, I woke up to find the freezer door wide open and everything thawed. LUCKILY though, no one ate anything, but I h ad to throw a ton of groceries away.

OMGoodness! I've never heard of a cat doing something like that. BooBoo can get into the pantry closet in the kitchen if it's not shut properly, but the freezer door? How on earth are you going to keep that door shut now that he knows how to open it? That is one very smart cat. Sorry about your food, though.....it's not really funny. (But I'm envisioning Monet trying to open that door! What a stinker!)

I think he tried to jump on the fridge and his feet kicked the door open. I am going to get some scat things, I don't want him on top of the fridge anymore.. I keep my fresh fruit up there.

I am calmer now, and laughing at the situation.. but sad to lose all the food. It gave me an opportunity to clean and scrub down the freezer anyway.

Welcome to the club! We had a child-proof handle put on our freezer door. The guy who installed it said it was popular with cat owners rather than parents of young children. You could email the manufacturer to see if they have them.
My sister had a cat who opened the fridge and pushed food out for the dogs to eat. She got a big rubber strap from a moving company which stopped her cat.

My brothers gf used a lock as the 3yo would help herself to capri suns and soda and make a mess doing so.

I have used the fridge lock for my cabinet under sink as they tend to open that one up(its got a shelf with no back so they can get under it and I can not get them as its to tight) I got mine at walmart they have a bigger area of sticky back and a long flexible plastic piece that gives you plenty of room.  Think it was 5 dollars but it lasted a long time before it needed to be replaced.

As to the food sorry to hear-I have a cat who likes to rip open any bag of cat food she sees even when shes full and when I had a stack of 20 bags it was disaster and had to tape many of them and move them all upstairs.  Since going to wet food shes popped a few can lids.

thanks for the advice everyone!

I am going to go to the hardware store and see if I can find something tonight so I won't have to wait for shipping. Last thing I'd want is Monet to accidentally shut himself in the freezer when I am not around!

Anyone have any suggestions where to order Sssccat from?

Oh
Sorry, I know I shouldn't laugh but wow, he is one smart kitty, haha.

Thank goodness my fridge fits into a hole so it's flush with the wall ahaha so my cats cant get on top of it at all. Although Turtle jumps in the fridge everytime you open it

He's such a smart kitty! I'm sorry about the wasted food. You can get Ssscat at Petsmart, they also have it on their website. I have baby-proofed my house more for the cat then the kids :lol3:

Oh my goodness!  That is NOT how you want to start your day!!  I'd probably have cried.

I hope you find something to keep him out of there!  We had to replace the tubing for the water dispenser on our refrigerator a few months after we moved in.  Noodles would hear the water filling the ice maker or one of us getting some water.  We'd find her staring behind the refrigerator obsessively!  We tried keeping her from it and redirecting her; but she eventually pulled it out and bit though it.  Luckily I found the puddle not long after so it wasn't too bit of a mess.  When we went to get the new tubing at Lowes the girl just laughed and said a lot of cat owners have that problem too.  Guess they keep it on hand for a reason!

Use Duct tape on the door. It works very well!!!

Abby figured out how to open the freezer door when she was a kitten.  She hung off the edge of the top freezer door and using her hind legs, pushed off and flung herself repeatedly until the door opened.  I took to taping the door closed and after a couple months of failures, she finally gave up.

I know- I'd be mad too if one of the cats did that.  But it is funny. It sounds like something Holly (aka Mayhem) would do.

She managed to figure out how to open up a plastic container that held dry cat food- first time she did that it was a MESS.

That's funny too.  If Holly could get behind the fridge she'd probably bite through the water dispenser tubing too.

And I know this because she LOVES the water fountain we got from Jasper's former owner.  It's her favorite toy- she'll knock the top off of it so she can "play"with the running water.
