Now that spring has sprung (at least for half of the world), DH and I are getting excited about our garden. Today's question is do you plant a garden? If so, what do you usually plant and have you had success?

Gardening is one of my hobbies so yes, I have gardens.  I do not have the sunlight to plant a vegetable garden so I stick with flowers, bushes and trees.  Shrubs too.  I could list everything I have but it would take days and pages and pages to tell it all.  I hope some of the responders have veggie gardens.  I love to read about how they plant their veggies and herbs.

I have swiss chard, spinach, tomatoes and mushrooms growing right now (I live in the desert, so this was my winter crop, which has now just about had it.)  I think I posted pictures of my plants back in November!  I'm thinking about planting some yellow and suchini (sp?) squash this summer, since nothing else grows here in this beastly heat.  My tomato plants will be totally dead by mid May, I'm sure.

In my Aerogarden (indoors), I just shut it down, but had salad greens growing for the past 4 months, and normally I plant herbs in it for the summer, but am thinking about taking a break from them this summer.  No reason for that really, just lazy, I guess!  Although last year I grew lemon basil for the first time, and I must say, it was absolutely wonderful in a tall glass of iced tea.  Hmmm.  Maybe I should re-think this and plant some more.  I mean, really, since it's sitting on my kitchen counter, all I have to do is add water and fertilizer every couple of days and it literally just takes off.  Oh yes, must trim it almost every day, but that's where the iced tea comes in.  Trim it and put it directly into my glass

Last year, we grew two kinds of corn, several kinds of squash, green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, red beets, and green beans.

This year, we will increase the number of plants for cucumbers (because I'd like to can more pickles), more red beets, and more tomatoes. In addition, I'd like to try potatoes, some carrots, asparagus (although I don't think they'll do much the first year), some lettuces, and some limas. I'd also like to grow more in the way of herbs. Oh, and some butternut squash. Green peppers again. Some strawberry plants. Perhaps some little pumpkins.

We tried acorn squash, but as soon as the little squashes would form, something would happen to them.

Last year I planted my very first!  DH bought me a raised bed kit. It's small, only 4'x8', but just enough for us to start with!  I wanted to expand it this year; but with us having another baby that will have to wait.  Baby is due right around planting time.  I already don't know if I can get down to weed it!

Last year I did summer squash and zucchini, carrots, peas, bush beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes.  This year I am leaving out the summer squash and zucchini.  Or I'll see if I can grow them in a separate pot.  They took over and buried my beans.  Also my peas didn't do well; but I'm going to try them again.

I would love to try some cantaloupe; but I don't know if I have the room in that little garden.

I also hope to do some herb pots.  Basil, oregano, thyme and maybe mint.  I did the first 3 in a pot last year but didn't really use much of it.  Oh I also love the smell of lemon balm!  Reminds me of my Gram's herb garden!

I'm just afraid to commit to something and not have time for it this year with a newborn.  But I found my few minutes of tending the garden to be really relaxing last year too.  So we will see!

Yeah, I remember the pictures of your killer zucchini last year (and by killer, I mean they could have been used as weapons!
 ) I was SO jealous!

We're kind of doing what you did this year. Instead of planting behind the house and giving the groundhogs an "all you can eat buffet", we're doing 5 raised beds in front of the house. Each will be 8X8, one with tomatoes and green peppers, one with zucchini and summer squash, one with green beans, carrots and lettuce, one with strawberries and one across the road with cucumbers and cantaloupe. They're going to be fenced in, both the keep the deer out and to keep the barn cats from using them as a litter box. It's not going to look pretty, but if it saves money I'm all for it!

Oh that sounds like a good plan!  I am a little concerned about the neighbor's cat that regularly visits our back yard.  I hope he doesn't take to using my garden for a box....  I know how he gets in and I could probably come up with a barricade; but I don't mind when he comes bird watching or hangs out under our patio furniture for shade and shelter.

We have so much shade that vegies are not practical.

My daughter has a farm up by the lake, so last year she gave us one of her gardens.  We planted fourty tomato plants, peppers, squash, basil.  Too much harvesting.

So this year, I am planting white pumpkins to sell.  Not many people have them, so it shoud be fun!  Plus, only one harvest in October!

I just cleaned out most of the vegetable garden on Saturday. The asparagus will be up before you know it, so I had to get that part at least cleaned up. We do have a fence around it, but last year baby bunnies were still getting in, so I am adding chicken wire around the outside. I finished one side on Saturday. I think the garden is 25 feet x 25feet. It's fairly large.

As I mentioned before, we have asparagus and also strawberries. The birds tend to get to the strawberries tough. I'll have to try netting this year. I also have one section that has perennial herbs like oregano, chives, sage. I add basil, more oregano, thyme, rosemary, cilantro and a few others every year.

For vegetables, always tomatoes, grape and plum at the very least. Cucumbers, zuchini and a few varieties of peppers. Always string beans. In the past I've tried corn with little success. I've done pumpkins, gourds, eggplant, celery, spinach, kohlrabi, kale, and various lettuces. It depends what catches my eye when I shop for the plants.

My neighbor used to have tomatoes and a few other things growing in this 10x3 garden and was happy to share:)  I have known for awhile we are not staying at this house but next house I would like to try

Yes, I do. I rent too, so didn't think I could, but it's an old house turned into two apartments one upstairs (me), & one downstairs. Usually anything like that I do is an improvement, so my landlord doesn't mind. Besides, I've been there almost 14 yrs.  A couple of years ago when I was unemployed, having the time,  I started one.

It's only about a foot & 1/2 or so deep, but very long. It runs the whole wall in front of my stairs. On the tall end of the wall I planted giant sunflowers, then I had a mixed packet of seeds that I put at the other end. (came out nice & full!). In between, I had some zinnias, marigolds etc..

I haven't planted this year yet, but hope to get to it very soon!

Here is a link to some pictures of it, if you want to see! :)

I also have a garden album on my profile page here!

ENJOY!  Would love to see others garden pictures if you have them. :)

We are currently doing our garden as when we moved in it was awful, so last year he started it and we have decked a massive area and he has just put a rockery and water feature in, he still has a lot to do but we do plant but they are all in pots so a lot easier for us.x
