Hi Folks,

Kitty has a brown crusty sore on his nose (pic below). It has appeared and grown over the last three days, but seems to have stopped getting bigger. He was neutered 9 days ago, so I was thinking that maybe hormonal changes are causing acne? He also was recently on medication for ringworm, maybe something to do with that? He was also in a fight about two weeks ago and developed an abscess. I hope it's not a symptom of feline lukemia. Maybe he just stuck his nose into an irritant?

I would be in a rush to get to the vet; my first fear would be melanoma or other skin cancers.  It could be just an injury or something during the neutering, but it seems like it would have come up sooner than that.  We humans look for cause/effect when it's not necessarily there.

However, I do notice what looks like an injury to his lip, below his nose.

Have you tried scraping at it, gently, with a fingernail or rubbing it with a wet washcloth?

No way it's cancer... it developed in about two days.

Honestly, my first reaction was that it looked like cancer as well. I'd be thrilled to be wrong but I wouldn't play around with it.

There's no place like home
My dog got ringworm on his nose that looked just like that. Ringworm is a fungal infection, and if your kid sniffed a spot where the fungus was present, it could have infected his nose. Think of how a cat sniffs at things sometimes - sometimes from a distance, and sometimes with their nose smack against the smell.

Whether he was treated recently for ringworm or not, some cases are highly virulent and need repeated treatments. Regardless of what this is, I suggest a return to the vet.

It does not look like cancer to me and it developed too quickly.  It looks like ringworm and maybe it it the more virulent kind.  Is it possible he got into something and maybe got a burn on his nose? If you can scrape it and it is scabby that might be a burn.  I dunno.  I would check with the vet again and possibly if it is still ringworm, change his meds for it.  I've never dealt with it but I've heard tell it can be very stubborn.

Did you ever figure out what it was, treat it, or did it go away on its own? I was doing a Google search on cat nose crusties since my cat developed one quickly, and your picture looks exactly like the one mine has.

Hi! Did either of you figure out what this was? My cat has the exact same issue and it has developed rather quickly and does appear to still be darkening / growing.
Would appreciate any insight while we wait for her vet appointment.

My German shepherd lost his leg to melanoma, so I do have an opinion as to what it looks like....that does not mean that I am medically qualified to say what other animals might have. Background to melanoma is that it can arise anyplace in the body where there is melanin, so it does not mean that an animal, or human, sat out in the sun and developed it that way, although that is one very good way to get it if you are a human.

Orlando has very thick fur, and I was not combing his body looking for cancer, so my first guess is that it did take more than 2 days to develop and I did not find it until it was a very black shiny lump which was crowning from under his fur. The pic of the cat's nose is much duller and even lighter than the melanoma was. I am guessing this is not melanoma but if you had said that it was developing for a while I would definitely say that it was one form of skin cancer or another.

Whatever it is, I would definitely get back to the vet asap so that they can begin to treat it.

Thank you for the info!
We are concerned it might be melanoma / squamous cell carcinoma or something else cancerous.
It appeared about 5-6 days ago, initially looked like a smudge of dirt but now is definitely more pronounced.
While ginger cats are prone to pigmentation changes, this does still appear to be spreading ~2mm everyday, which is what is concerning us greatly.
Not much we can do in the meantime while waiting for her vet appointment.

I agree that going to the vet is the best course of action and, no, you can't do much on your own about it except to keep observing it. It still seems to me that this is quick development for skin cancer; I had my own episode of squamous, which should not be ignored either, but it was not a 5 day development from nothing to a large growth so I am hoping that your kitty has some strange skin condition that can be easily treated.

Hi all, did any of you manage to get a diagnosis for your cats? Mine has a very similar looking scab that has appeared and grown in the past few days (see image attached) and I'm really concerned about what it could be. We can't get a vet's appointment until next week so wondering if anybody could let me know their outcome. Thank you in advance.

Did you figure it out either? My kitten has something on her nose too that developed over the past week very fast.

hello my young has a similar nose with almost similar wounds.

but nor me or the vet have no clue what this exactly is. It used to be crusted on the whole tip of the nose. However few days ago some parts seem to be healed, see second pic, so less crustiness.
Today near the eye it looks like a small bump wich might be another crust on its way. As if he had / has wounds wich started to heal, since those crust would appear on humans after a wound. But than how did those wounds start? By scratching? Allergic reaction? Skin disease? Fungal? 0 clue….
