This poor kitten in my city was stuck in a tree for days, and firefighters refused to help her down. A man tried to rescue her, but got stuck in the tree as well. The firefighters rescued the man, but not the cat, saying that they didn't have the equipment and it was a safety hazard because the kitten might have hurt them. She eventually fell out
. She's okay, but it still makes me so mad. This is even more reason to never let Bowser outside here...

Here's a video:

In NYC it's a rare FF that will extend the ladder to get a cat out of a tree. I asked my husband why, and he replied that they are taught that cats CAN get out of trees, off telephone poles, off a roof, or the like. They climb up, they can climb down or jump. Many times a team will spend the better part of a day cutting branches and getting up there (They can't just extend a ladder against a tree when there's branches...) and the cat will be scared and jump or climb down or feel threatened and injure a firefighter. Out here, volunteers normally won't go up trees for a cat either.

If it's a young kitten, maybe, but they have a saying "You never find cat skeletons in trees" cats can get down.

In the video-that's no kitten. It's an adult cat that CAN inflict injury, and odds are the kitty can get down by itself. My Pumpkin (RIP) used to climb up all the trees in the yard, and we have very big and old trees. She always went up and came down no problem. Like I said, if it's a young kitten, I can see it being a serious situation since they constantly get themselves into a fine mess, but an adult cat-odds are, they're not getting the FD to get them down.

The owner said she was 6 months old, so she's pretty young. She's also cross-eyed, and has trouble just walking around in general so getting out of a tree would be pretty difficult. I can understand that there are certain guidelines and that in some cases you just can't go up there... but the firefighters were already in the tree to rescue the man who tried to get her. That's the part that really makes me mad... THEY WERE ALREADY IN THE TREE.

That's true, but they said the cat was still several feet away, and no mention of branches or anything else.(And if someone is being assisted down from a tree, unless the cat perches on his head, the rescuer's gotta get down then back into the tree) I love cats very very much, but to be perfectly honest, to think my husband and the father of my 4 children could get hurt to rescue a cat that will find it's way down from the tree eventually, gives me the chills. That's why those rules are in force. The better bet to get anything from a tree would be to call a landscaper, or tree trimming company. They go up trees for a living. Kairi at 6 months old could really injure someone when scared, though. Ask my Shepherd if it's a good idea to fool with a scared cat! LOL!!!

My cousin had a cross eyed cat that had no problem getting around-even climbing anything and everything. (And getting down by himself) I never heard of cats that are cross eyed having a problem walking around in general.

I am glad the cat is ok though, and nobody got hurt.
