Hobo has a little tartar build up on his teeth. The vet suggested he will probably need a dental in the future. I have had it done for my dog many times because for some reason she gets pretty bad build up. I really should give them all RMB's but I am scared to do it. I have let the dogs chew on deer legs foe 10 minutes a day until they were gone. It didn't seem to help clean them though. How long or often would I need to let him eat a RMB? Or should I just go the dental route?

With cats, eating bone-in meals can help keep their teeth clean, but it will not remove plaque and tartar build-up that currently exists. That must be done by a dental. And cats do not have the same jaw strength dogs do; they should be given the wing tip and middle part of chicken wings, or chicken or rabbit ribs several times a week. But really, nothing replaces brushing.

We get dentals done every six months for Chumley, who is FIV+ and prone to problems. We can't brush his teeth, as we're still working on just being petting with hands instead of heads. :lol3: We get dentals done annually for Spooky, who is also prone to problems with her teeth - she had her first tooth removed when she was just one or two. She's 10 this year, and has had 4 or 5 removed, and we brush her teeth (she loves it LOL). Lazlo hasn't had a dental for 3 or 4 years, but needs one; same with Tux. SO much of this really just depends on genetics.
