Every Saturday, my local paper highlights animals waiting for new homes at several area shelters, humane societies and/or breed rescues.

On March 10, an 18-year-old orange cat named Buddy was featured.  The following week, there was the delightful news that he had been adopted.

The Pasadena Humane Society, which is about ten miles (16 km) west of my home, took him in.  Pasadena is also the site every January 1 of the Rose Parade.

Anyhow, I doubt this cat was found on the streets because how would anyone know that he was 18 years old?  He must have either been turned in by the owner, or perhaps his owner died, and family or friends turned him in.

In any case, it is delightful that someone with a heart for older animals took Buddy in, because we all know that everyone wants the younger cats.  The Pasadena HS gives animal far more time to find homes than city or county shelters, because only residents of Pasadena can turn animals in.  Had Buddy gone to the county shelter near my home, he probably would have little or no time at all.  In fact, he may have been put down the same day because of his age.

Another animal featured the same time as Buddy, a little terrier mix, had been at another humane society for a year before he, too, was finally adopted last week.  Good news there also.

Also, if you want to see a cute video, please go to www.scottishspca.org.  It is "Rehoming Week" in Scotland, and the SPCA has put a video together, featuring everything from hamsters to fish to goats to lizards to dogs and cats.  I like the term "Rehoming."  Too bad we don't use it in the U.S.

Aww, I love stories like this.  That's wonderful for Buddy.  And the little dog, finally a home of his own.

It's amazing isn't it?? And not in a good way.

We actually got our Bogey in much the same way. He was 18 and his people, who had him since he was a kitten, was "tired of taking care of him". They said he threw up and was shedding too much. They were taking him to a high kill shelter so, DH and I stepped in and took the old guy in.

He's now 21. Once we got him we discovered he was hyperthyroid and had arthritis. Both of which are easily treated. They just didn't want to make the effort. Granted, we spend a lot of time and money to keep the old guy comfortable and healthy. He is a wonderful kitty and has bonded deeply with my DH.

The old kitties are just as wonderful as those bouncy kittens....just in a different way.

People will come up all kinds of excuses -- allergies, behavioral problems, relocation -- to justify getting rid of a pet.  I hate that term -- getting rid of them -- versus finding them homes.  It sounds like the animals are thrown in the garbage.  But often people are indeed interested in getting rid of a pet.

At least Bogey's former owners were honest about not wanting him anymore.  But to blame him for his purported problems was not right.  As everyone on this site knows, a cat that supposedly has a multitude of problems, either behavioral or physical, often has none and turns out to be a wonderful fur baby.

Someday, the same people who tossed a pet into the street (literally or figuratively) will find themselves old and unwanted by their families.  What goes around, comes around.

It's so heartwarming to see  a story like this --- you made my day!     And the people who wouldn't take care of a senior cat should never be allowed to have a pet again.    Would you give up your husband or wife or mother or father when they got old and have problems?    Thank you for sharing.

There are wonderful human beings on this planet FOR SURE!!!! Wonderful news about Buddy. In fact, a TCS member, Robin, just took in a 15 year old cat from the shelter where she volunteers as her new foster. What a saint.... so this cat would not have to live out his life in a shelter environment. I just LOVE stories like those. The most heart-warming of all. :heart3: :heart3: :heart3:
