thanks! i guess i was just wondering how old my cats are - about 1 1/2 yrs ago i adopted them and i was told they were 3-4 years old but i think they may be older. how can i tell a cat's age?
What I've been told by a couple of vets and a couple of vet techs and some other shelter workers, is that after a cat is 3 or 4 years old, one can't really tell, at least from external appearance. At a certain point, when a cat gets quite elderly, physical changes make it obvious.
I had a cat who had been a stray, but had been at a shelter 2 years. They estimated him at 5, but that is what they say for mature cats that are probably between about 3 and 12. He had to have surgery at one point, and the vet told me that she'd estimate from how his organs looked that he was more like 10 or 12.
