We have a 12 yo dog that is terrified of storms. He sleeps next to our bed every night but when it is storming, he gets to sleep on the bed because he gets so scared.

Well last night, around 3 a.m., out of nowhere, the LOUDEST clap of thunder I have ever heard shook our windows, even knocked out the power, it was crazy. Then the weirdest flash of lightening lit up the room. Needless to say, Charlie was very scared. He literally collapsed into a heap on the floor. I finally encouraged him to stand up (he is very heavy, especially when he's dead weight) and walk to my side of the bed but he collapsed again when the lightening struck so DH helped lift him onto the bed.

As per usual, he settled right down and we all fell asleep again. About 30 minutes later I was woken up by Charlie's panting. I've never seen him panting and breathing so hard. DH woke up to it was so loud. He was drooling and his eyes were running. I was terrified that he was having a heart attack. We tried to calm him for about 15 minutes, DH turned the air on high in case he was just very hot and pulled the blanket out from underneath him.

Finally, DH got the treat bag out and he got off the bed so we could see if he could walk....I was frantically looking up canine heart attack symptoms. I went ahead and moved to the couch as that is the coolest piece of furniture in the house and Charlie's absolute favorite place to sleep. His breathing started to normalize and he began to settle down. I stayed awake and watched him breathing while he fell asleep. I put my hand on his chest and fell asleep myself.

When I woke up this morning he was totally normal, like nothing had happened. I had the vet look him over today and the only thing we can figure is that he was too scared to move off the bed when he got hot and just laid there and overheated.

We are keeping an eye on him. All I kept thinking about while I was petting him last night was that it could maybe be the last time I'd get to do that, but now that it's over, I keep thinking that's what it will be like when I have to let him go.

RAFM, could he have been having a panic attack?  Some dogs are just so terribly frightened of thunder and you know Charlie is one of them, so it makes sense.

I'm a volo at a centre with both dogs and cats and we absolutely dread the storm season as we can't be there cuddling the poor things.

I'm glad he's OK.  It does give you a scare, though, when something like that reminds you that your beloved animals are not going to be with you forever.  Best to really enjoy the time we have with them.

Over the river and through the woods...
Panic attack was my first thought as well. Brooke does NOT like storms at all! She was found and turned in to the shelter after 3 days of severe storms. Luckily, the shelter called our vet to try to find a home for her. That's where we found her. But she is still terrified of thunder and lightning. She sleeps in our room at night but the only time she really gets up on the bed is when there is a bad storm. She has been to the point of panting, drooling, etc and she's fine the next day. We've learned if there are bad thunderstorms coming through she does better with a benedryl in her so she sleeps through it.

Thanks guys. I just hate seeing him so scared, it gets worse the older he gets.

Have either of you tried 'thunder shirts'? I've heard good things about them and have considered getting one for him.

Sorry.. only just noticed this and it's getting a bit late to reply but the Animal Welfare League I do volo work for uses them for dogs frightened of thunder etc.  It doesn't necessarily work on all dogs, and they aren't cheap, but they do work well with a lot of dogs.

We are expecting alot of storms this evening and tonight so I may swing by and pick one up for him on my way home from work. I'm pretty sure I'm sleeping on the couch tonight though. ;)

You could also try making your own wrap, these can be made with Ace bandages and/or a t-shirt. Here's some instructionsL

http://www.ttouch.co.za/files/what/bodywraps.php
http://www.crvetcenter.com/ttouch.php

Those homemade versions are similar to a product called the Anxiety Wrap which is also available for sale (https://anxietywrap.com/default.aspx) if you don't want to make one yourself. The Anxiety Wrap was actually around way before the thundershirt, the thundershirt is a copy of it.  I've read that the Anxiety Wrap product works better/ works for more dogs than the thundershirt. So if you try the thundershirt and it doesn't work, that might work for you.
