Hello,

Well I know this isn't new. I've been reading posts over the net about cats missing, but thought to drop a post too.

We take care of 2 feral cats. They are 2 brothers, almost 1 year old. One of them is missing.

They are indoor/outdoor cats. Our house yard is big with little garden around and it is surrounded by 2-meter tall walls. So when you are in the yard, nobody form alley can see you and the cats we take care of, always stay in our yard which they find safe. But since we feed them in our yard, sometimes the smell of the food attracts other feral cats and then we have cats fighting in the yard. So we run to the yard to break the fight. One time, one of these outsider bit one of the males and he bleed and everything and started limping for a long time! (we sprayed OTC on the wound). The cats are not neutered.

After these 2 cats got sick once (vomiting round worm), we took them to a vet and de-wormed them and after that, since they were clean, we let them come inside the house too. They got so friendly and we got so close.

3 months ago, the male which is missing now (the even friendlier one), disappeared for 4 hours for the first time and worried us a lot, then came back wet and hungry. Next time after that, he went way for 8 hours and continued this behavior every 4-5 days for 6-10 hours. So that we got used to it and look at him as a cat who loves outside and exploring.

This is a cat which used to wakes us up every morning around 6:30 am by meowing or trying to open the door himself...

Now it is 10 days he is missing. I went looking for him 3 times. We live near the sea and there are a lot of bushy grounds around our house so basically we have small jungles all around us. I looked for him as much as could, but I always sensed that if he is somewhere close that can go to, then he must come back for the food. He is a big cat and a very quick one. Our friends usually get surprising how such a big cat can run so fast and so much friendly, he always gotta be near me even when he is not hungry and grooms my hands.

So what's our deal now? Should we expect him to show up at all? In these 10 days, we have thought about every hypothesis that what happened to him. Few are below:

1. He is hit by a car. (to get to a road with fast cars, it is about 5-6 mins human walk and plenty of bushy grounds in between, why cat wants to cross the street?)

2. He is bit by a dog/jackal. Sometimes at late night, we hear some screaming, like some people are "partying" and screaming around. At first I thought someone is being beaten or something, but then I was told there were jackals? not sure the English word. Anyway they are so frightened of humans and very rarely come close to people's home.

3. He found another owner and they took him with them? How often that happens?

4. He is out for mating. Well this is our only hope remaining. We were told that when the mating season ends, he might come back. Is it a marathon?

5. He has just left or found a better place. Someone told my wife "male cats does that!". She told her that she had 3 cats, 1 female and 2 males and both males went away. My wife thinks it is really our case. "He's just went away" which seems unlikely to me, how often a cat sacrifices his food source?

6. Some animal service have taken him away. This could make sense to me cause in these 10 days, we didn't see any outsider cat in our yard, nor in our alley. It's weird that there's no cat around other than our yard ones. But again, I checked, there's no animal service or anything similar in this city.

Thanks for your time :)

Cats that are outside are subject to a million dangers, some of which you've discovered.  They go from the microscopic (diseases and parasites) to other animals, other cats, dogs, predators, and two-legged predators, cars, falls, being stuck in some hidden place, etc.

Ten days is a long time, but not hopeless.

It's hard to say what could have happened, but unnuetered males do wander off in search of females and etc.  If the cat returns please have him neutered which will do alot to stop the wandering behavior.

Neuter Neuter Neuter. An unaltered male will travel MILES if he smells a female in heat. If they are neutered that will stop the fighting.

He probably left to find females. If nothing happens to him out there (there are a lot of roads to cross in a 5 mile range--which is an unneutered tom's usual territory), he will probably come back when all the females are pregnant. This time. After 2-3 years, unneutered brothers prefer not to share territory and one will leave (or at least this is what I see with ferals and farm cats). Please have him neutered if he comes back. It will make his life a lot easier, will stop a lot of the fighting, and may prevent some unwanted pregnancies. His brother should be neutered, too.

It doesn't sound like they're feral? Not if they're tame enough to handle like you describe.
