I had my ears pierced when I was 15 or 16, I can't remember which. I left the studs in for a few days but then switched them over to sleepers and they healed much better and faster than they were doing with the studs in. It was also less annoying for me when I went to sleep. I got second holes done about a year later and just left the studs in for them, they didn't heal as nicely.

I hardly ever wear earrings now, I can go a year or more without wearing them but when I put them in they just pop right through. They've never grown over.

More than likely, you are allergic to nickel.

You can get whatever dangly earrings you want - just replace the fish-hook things that go through the ears with nickel-free ones.

You can get them on e-bay.

I got some simple nickel-free sterling silver studs and hoops on ebay very cheap ( $5-$10 a pair.)

Also, you guys should know "hypoallergenic" is meaningless - you can put that label on anything - there is no gov't standard (like organic).

"Unfortunately, many people (around 12-15%), the female population especially, are allergic to nickel in contact with the skin and this gives rise to a red skin rash or irritation. This problem applies to costume/fashion jewellery, white gold and steel jewellery, zippers and fasteners and other body piercings.

The European Union countries have enacted legislation (under the EU Nickel Directive) valid from the 20th January 2000 that limits nickel release from jewellery and other items in close and constant contact with the skin. Thus, in Europe, nickel white golds are being phased out and being replaced by palladium white golds, although low nickel alloys that meet the nickel release requirements of the Directive are still in service."

12k is a fake? First I have heard that.
All my suppliers have 12k GF in stock and I have been buying it for almost 35 years now.

12kt GF = 12kt Gold Filled.

I've just googles it and NOWHERE does it say 12k gold is fake.

This is from here http://www.wheretoselljewelry.com/gold-jewelry-is-it-real-or-fake

There is lots and lots of charts and websites on gold.
actual 12kt gold is EXTREMELY rare to find. 99.9% of the time in the US and Canada it will be 1/20 12kt. Or 12ktGF. Actual 12kt is almost never used in jewelry making. Its more common in computer parts.

Just a heads up.  My daughter had her ears pierced for five years now.  Overnight, one ear became "infected" even with cleaning and turning.  It looked awful and I took her to the doctor.  He gave her antibiotics and cream and wanted her back in a week.  Within that week, the other ear ring did the same thing.

We were able to remove one of the ear rings and the other, after the week, the doctor could not remove.  All infection and inflamation was gone but her skin grew around the front of her ear ring.  I had to actually have out patient surgery to remove it.  Cost to me....close to 5 grand.

It's likely nickle that you are reacting too. Many silver items contain nickle.  So look for nickle free sterling silver and give them a try.

I have a very hard time with pierced earrings.  When I wear most earrings my ears start to itch, and at the end of the day (if I'm able to keep them in that long), the holes are weeping.

It isn't 100% fool proof, but I can usually tolerate wearing sterling silver earrings for a day with very minor irritation.  What I find helps is if I put some polysporin on the post/hoop before putting it on.

Also, I found a brand of earrings at a drug store here.   They are for "sensitive ears", and include studs and hoops. I find that I can wear any of these earrings without a problem of any kind. In fact I've taken to wearing the "sensitive ears" sleepers and studs daily and only taking them out when I want to change it up when I go out in the evening.

Piercing Pagoda only seems to be in the US, but they seem tobe affiliated with Icing, which has a shop near me, so maybe I'll try them
Icing is owned by Claire's. It's usually the same merchandise as Claire's, but tends to be more expensive.

I had that happen with the backing on my earring when I was about 12. It was very painful.

Sorry, I did NOT use a stud, I have a hoop, dont know how I mixed that up.

Katie, that's why I got them done with a needle. I have had many piercings over the years (MANY, haha) and they ALL healed perfectly besides the ears.

I had mine done this morning and I am LOVING them, Cross your fingers I have no problems with them ;)

Has anybody who has metal allergies tried titanium earrings? That's what my watch is made of, and I've never had any trouble with it, unlike most watches I've owned.
