I scheduled an appointment on Wednesday to get kitty fixed and I feel terrible about it.

I know that it's the right thing to do; shelters are brimming with kittens that must be euthanized, it will help to stop him from peeing on things, he won't get into as many fights, it will reduce the risk of him contracting illnesses, and he won't roam as much.

But I still feel like I'm maiming him.

Its such a simple procedure for males. Buddy was back to his normal self in less than 24 hours. Little bit of pain.. probably no worse than getting into a nasty fight and getting some gashes.

No need to feel guilty.

My male cat bounced right back. He was back to his old self that evening, just putting up with my other cat hissing at him because he smelled like the vet's office. Cats and dogs don't rationalize about things like this the way humans do. Once the anesthetic wears off, the soreness goes away and he won't know that anything is different.

Aww!  I hated having my girls done; though I'd never consider not doing it.  I was so out of it the afternoon I dropped them off at the vet (not my normal one; I was using a military vet at the time and they don't do that there) I took a wrong turn and got lost!  A friend happend to call my cell and I remember telling her "All I see is CORN!"
Fortunately you really can't get too lost around here.

I have seen male cats that acted like nothing had happened, once they came out of the anesthesia (which can take most of a day, by the way).  Many vets are using very minimally invasive techniques now.

Your boy won't miss them, you won't miss them, and your relationship is likely to be better because of it.

I just had 2 male kittens neutered 2 weeks ago. It took 40 minutes, and the larger boy (3,5kg) acted completely like nothing had ever happened, you could only tell from his eyes that he was a bit 'high'.
The smaller boy (2,8kg) was a bit unstable on his back legs and seemed more out of it, but got completely normal in 2 hours.

The recovery took longer on my adults back when they were neutered. Maybe 6 hours, and then they still acted a bit suspicious like 'yeah, something is missing down there' for a day and got normal. Over here the procedure is done very quickly, it takes max an hour (includes the waking part in the vet's office) and you can take them home already.

Your kitty will not miss anything.  They do not think like humans.  It never occurred to me to feel bad about neutering and spaying....they don't have the ability to reason.

I hear ya. I felt terrible when I took Tabby to the vet for her spay. It's the right thing to do; we all know that. But, as a meowmie, it doesn't make us feel any better.

Your little one will be fine.

So I still feel really bad about this and having second thoughts. Maybe II did the wrong thing? He's so lethargic.. just laying around.. he's lost the fire that he had as an intact cat.

If you had surgery yesterday, wouldn't you be a bit lethargic today? :dk:

The anesthetic will make him feel groggy for a few days. It's too soon to see any hormonal changes anyway. But after the drugs wear off, he should have just as much "fire" as ever. Just fewer paternity suits :tongue2:.
