A dear, sweet purring machine, named Halo, is living with us. He is a 15 year old foster with beginning symptoms of crf. Keeping his weight on is important.

He likes slices, or shredded with gravy, not pate. I want to get him off the Friskies and Fancy Feast that the shelter fed him. He does like the Wellness slices (or flaked) food, both chicken and turkey. Also Soulistic chicken and Taste of the Wild (but has some fish in it) he will more or less eat.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good foods of this type? I want to stay away from beef and fish. Pretty much poultry is the only option. But I'd like to find some other good brands that make this type of food.

Thanks in advance.

HI Robin!!!!!!!!!! Of course I have already congratulated you on your wonderful mission to give Halo a wonderful life in his old age as your new foster but here is another one :clap: :woohoo: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!! :hugs::heart3::bigthumb: Your just incredible what you are doing to help the "special needs" and "senior" kitties :hugs::hugs: :rub:

I already sent you this in an email but will add it here too. I really think that Weruva Cats in the Kitchen pouches and Weruva wet foods might be well taken by Halo. All shredded. My cats love the Paw Lickin Chicken. NOT the Chicken soup... they do not like the peas and carrots :nono: and I end up having to pick those out so I just don't buy that one anymore. I use the Paw Lickin Chicken a lot. A real hit with my kitties.

Tiki Cat also makes a shredded Chicken. Succulent Chicken and Chicken with Egg. Another excellent one to try. No fish, all chicken.

I am sure other's will come along very soon with some other suggestions for your foster Halo :rub: :heart2: :wavey:

Gee, thanks for the kind words, Lauren. I can't wait for you to meet Halo on the 29th. Unlike most of my other goofy cats, he doesn't hide when people come over. And he fit right in, getting along well with the others. Except for the jealousy problem, that is.

Last night, as Halo was stretched out on my lap in the green chair in my living room (purring like mad), one after another, Lily, Claude, Harlow, and Constantine, jumped up on the arm of the chair to check out the lap. The look of dismay or disgust on the little faces as each turned and jumped down, was just hilarious, but pitiful. They sort of left in a huff, so to speak. I have to make an effort to give all attention now. Not enough laps at my house.

I'll check out the Weruva and Tiki Cat at the natural pet food store. Thanks for the tips.

I want to post Halo's story and his picture. What forum should that be in?

:lol3: and :sniffle: for how the kitties must have felt jumping up on to your lap only to be shocked to see Halo laying in it. I don't mean to laugh - but it must have been funny to see the look on their faces and yet, sad at the same time ... Don't worry, as time goes on - the youngster's will realize that Halo is just a very nice old guy who wouldn't hurt a fly and then they will surprise you and snuggle all together :bigthumb: We can hope :cross: :lol3:

I would put his story in the Feral/Stray Forum. After all, Halo IS a rescue - the most noble kind of rescue - saving a senior cat from living out his days in a shelter cage...... BLESS YOU!!!!! :hugs: :heart3: :heart2:

Awwww.................... :heart3: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs: SUCH a wonderful thing to do for this boy! :rub: I don't have pouch food suggestions as Lauren already mentioned the Weruva pouches - those are the only other pouch foods I know of. But I HAD to say something about this incredible thing you're doing for Halo! :heart3: :heart3: :heart3:

I'm sure the extra attention you give to the others will make up for the lack of lap space. :heart3: :hugs: :cross:

Thanks, Laurie. He's really no trouble. He's sweet as can be. He smells like cinnamon sugar. It is one of those situations when the shelter is happy he is in a home. Technically, he is still available for adoption, but it isn't likely that anyone will want to take on such an old cat with his health problems.

I'm so lucky to have him. And he goes back to the shelter for medical care. He's going in Thursday for a shot for his arthritis. Means I've had him for 4 weeks.

He loves Constantine, but then, everyone does. He is so mellow and loving that none of the others mind him. He is a good spirit.

I'll tell more when I start a thread about him.

Why do you mention "pouches" of cat food. Are pouches more likely to be the pieces in gravy?

Here are some that I can think of, I don't know if some of these exist anymore.

-Innova Flex
-Nature's Variety Homestyle
-Weruva
-SOME Merrick flavors (some are pate and some are chunks, check labels or experiment)
-Wellness POUCHES and 3 ounce cans
-Blue Buffalo healthy Gourmet
-By Nature Goldleaf selects
-Soulistic (Petco "brand" which is I think actually made for them by Weruva)

Since Halo has the beginnings of CRF, IMO it would be best to stick with foods under 1.0 phosphorus, even better under 0.8 phosphorus.  At least, that is the guidelines I was told when Milo had CRF.  http://www.felinecrf.org/canned_food_usa.htm  has an easy chart to look up the phosphorus levels of different foods.

Nutro Max Cat is wonderful.  Precious is in CRF and this is one of the few things she'll eat.

I REALLY appreciate the suggestions and advice.

So does Halo.

We'll check them all out.

Thank you!

Thanks for that tip, too. The website told me of a pet food store in my town that sells the Earth Born food.

In my experience, the pouches are always pieces in gravy! :dk:

Yep :D... the pouches have much more gravy than the canned varieties and not as much meat. I like the Weruva Cats in the Kitchen pouches - they still have the shredded meats. I don't care for the Natural Balance pouches with the chunks/slices of thick meat. Weruva is shredded meat in the pouches and cans. ;)

Oh! I didn't realize that. In recent years, the only pouches I remember buying were Soulistic. Is the canned also shredded meat with gravy?
