I have PetPlan USA and have been quite pleased with it.  Ritz is prone to stress-induced UTIs, and after her first visit, PetPlan essentially paid for itself.  They reimbursed me for expenses I didn't expect them to, like Pill Pockets.  I will definitely renew the policy. Time between submission of claim and payment has been great.

PetPlan pays for unusual expenses, they don't pay for routine vaccinations even if required by law (like rabies) or wellness exams.  They pay "reasonable and customary" charges.  I live in the Washington, DC area, and they paid 100% of those fees (less deductible per illness).

Note, most pet insurance will not cover pre-existing illnesses, and will require you to submit Office Notes for the past two years (or less of course if you've only had the cat for a couple of months) to prove that.

Also, most pet insurance will not cover procedures which are not MEDICALLY necessary, including cropping of ears, spaying/neutering or declawing.

Exclusions/coverage may vary state-by-state.

Finally, as with anything, read the fine print carefully, particularly with regard to exclusions.

My 6 cats are insured with Pets Best Insurance. I haven't had a claim yet (knock wood), but others here have had many and said good things about them.

They have several types of plans, and a range of deductibles to choose from. The cost is quite affordable. As the animal ages, the cost goes up slightly each year. I have it for major illness, not small issues, so I have a somewhat high deductible. They don't cover dental work, at all. They require no vet records, but ask questions about the pets' health. I don't know their policy on prexisting conditions, but there is a whole page on their website explaining what is not covered. I'm impressed by what is covered.

Yes, read the fine print and ask questions when choosing a policy.
