Hi everyone.  My ~4 year old cat ran away into the woods the night of Feburary 16th while in heat with another cat.  She spent four days and nights out there, coming back with a bite on her neck.  The bite marks weren't visible but you could feel them when you touched the area.  Everything was fine until sometime in the middle of last week, when I was away on vacation and she was being taken care of by a family member.

She had been scratching the wound and the fur in the area is now gone.  She even scratched her collar off!  The wound had puss coming out of it, so today I cleaned it with a solution of antibacterial dial soap.  She was very cooperative while I cleaned it and didn't struggle at all.  An hour or two later, she very unexpectedly vomited blood three times spaced out a few minutes each time.  Each was smaller and darker than the other.

She has a history of Herpes and had a pretty bad outbreak about a year ago.  She wouldn't even eat, I had to force feed her with a syringe and gave her lysine.  She also does a fair amount of vomiting up her food.

I went back to school today, so I don't have contact with her directly at this time.  We don't currently have the means to take her to the vet, should I be worried about her?  Is there anything I should do?  Perhaps we should give her more lysine.

Here are some pictures of the wound and the third vomit.  Please give advice if you have any, I will keep you all updated as I get news.

This cat needs to be at the vet NOW!!! Why are you even posting about it on the internet? Ask the vet if you can make payment plans, or beg your friends and family to help you out. If there is no way to get financial assistance, I urge you to surrender your cat to a no-kill shelter so that they can give her the medical attention she desperately needs.

Vomiting Blood

Red blood in the vomitus indicates active bleeding somewhere between the mouth and the upper small bowel. This is most commonly caused by a foreign body. Material that looks like coffee grounds is old, partially digested blood. This also indicates a bleeding point between the mouth and upper small bowel.

Any cat who vomits blood has a serious condition and must be seen right away by a veterinarian

I would be getting my cat to a vet if it vomited blood like that. I agree ask for payment plans or any help you can get. I am sorry, but it is cruel to let your pet go without medical attention when it is so apparently needed.

Thanks for the comments, I know she really should go to the vet.  Unfortunately I don't think that's going to be an option. I was hoping someone would have some advise on how to treat this, or information about what his happening with her.  I've treated her at home before, and she would have died with out my help when she's had herpes outbreaks.  It's a very unfortunate situation indeed, and it's terrible that I can't be there to help her heal.

Is it possible that the blood in the vomit is not related to the wound?  I saw her licking the area that I washed with the antibacterial soap, could the blood be a reaction to the soap?

Quite honestly, if you can't afford vet care you need to surrender the animal. Failure to provide urgent medical care for your animal is abuse, pure and simple.

You've not spayed your cat and she may be pregnant (what will u do if she has complications in delivery, watch her die or seek medical care). Your cat sustained a SERIOUS wound to her neck and you didn't seek medical care or treat it. Now your cat is vomiting blood and you won't seek medical treatment for her. So, you are just going to watch her suffer and potentially die? It's cruel and abusive.

Surrender the cat if you can't afford treatment. My goodness it's the most humane thing you could do for the poor girl.

I hope you make the right decision.

Your kitty really need treatment from a vet. I don't think this is something you can treat yourself. some vets will take payments  you really need to get some help for this cat

I've found some information about possible bad reactions to the soap:

http://cats.about.com/od/catsafety/qt/antibacterial.htm

Hopefully she got everything out of her system and all will be well.  I find it quite hard to believe that the wound started making her vomit blood 3 whole weeks after the incident.  I'm not too worried about her licking/scratching the fur off of the surrounding area, as she's done that before to her leg.  As I said, she has been acting quite normally before the washing of the wound and was even acting fine when throwing up the blood.

Talked to a vet friend (who's unfortunately in a different state), and they said it's definitely not related to the wound or soap.  They said it might be a cut in her mouth, which could make sense.  She was outside today for a good amount of time hunting, so it's possible that she ate something that could have cut her.

If she's not spayed and she went off and came back with a neck bite, she's probably pregnant. If you can't afford to take her to the vet how are you going to be able to afford to take care of her kittens?

If shes sick and was bitten because she was outside. And being sick you are not and have not been able to afford vet care, You should at least keep her inside!

As per the forums rules:

No online advice can replace direct veterinary intervention. If you suspect that your cat may be ill, please contact your vet immediately. You are welcome to look for advice in the health forum while waiting for that appointment, but never delay proper veterinary care waiting for Internet advice. Remember that cats, and especially kittens, are very adept in keeping pain to themselves and delaying treatment may cause irreversible damage.

If you cannot afford a vet, there are resources available to you to ensure your cat gets the veterinary care. There is an excellent article titled “When You Can’t Afford a Veterinarian” on this website, available at http://www.thecatsite.com/Health/76/...erinarian.html. Please read through it to find out more about the options available to you.

As other posters have said, she is probably pregnant, even if the vomiting blood has subsided.  Is there some reason why she has not been spayed?

There are many low cost resources available to you to get your pet spayed/neutered. Cats can be neutered from 8 weeks old, and it is recommended to do it as soon as possible to reduce spraying, aggressive behaviour, unwanted litters, and a range of health problems.

Many clinics offer low cost or free spay and neuter clinics and can be found all around the world.

For a list of clinics in the US, please refer to this thread.

For low cost clinics in the US and Canada - http://www.savesamoa.org/html/spay_neuter.html#USCan

Please do the right thing by your kitty, and book in for an appointment.

that your girl is okay

I thought I'd give you all an update :)

Yesterday she threw up a couple times in the morning, no blood though.  It's not too uncommon for her to vomit, so nothing to be too worried about.  Today she hasn't vomited at all.  She's eating and acting normal, just being a little on the lazy side (ex. staying in her bed longer than normal).

I hope you get this vomiting figured out..... Vomiting 2xa day..... daily.... weekly.... is not anywhere nearly normal, for any cat.... This is something you should look at, and maybe consider changing her diet. IBD should be discussed.... There is something going on here that needs to be taken care of IMHO, and if not taken care of, it can escalate for worst problems.... Untreated IBD can get pretty serious....

By now I hope you have figured out why your cat is vomiting.  If not, perhaps I can help you.  I was a Veterinary Technician/Surgery Technician for 15 years.   I have been breeding Ragdoll cats as a hobby for the past 9 years so I consider myself something of an expert on most things cat related.

If she is still throwing up, change your cat over to a Grain Free food like Blue Wilderness, Taste of the Wild, Core Wellness or Evo.  Don't use a brand called "4 Health".  My personal favorite is Taste of the Wild in the Rocky Mountain Formula. This will most likely take care of your problems.
