So, my husband got his settlement check and handed me $1,000 for clothes shopping and for groceries. We both needed jean desperately because we are both down to about 2 pairs each that fit or are decent.

My first stop....Goodwill! I got: 4 pairs of jean for him (2 Levi's that look like they have never been worn), 4 pairs of jeans for me, 4 pairs of short for him, 2 sweatshirts, a spring jacket for him (in John Deer Green, which is where he works), a London Fog spring jacket for me which I don't think has ever been worn either because the tag is in perfect shape, a slicker for us for around the house, 3 pairs of lounge pants, a pair or pajamas for me, 4 serving/mixing bowls, a few plates and extra knives and a DVD of Pretty Woman...all for $124.18!

I was amazed!! The jeans were $6 each as well as the jackets. DH said I was the only women he knew that would go to Goodwill when she had $1,000 in her hands
! The good news is I still have plenty of money to go food shopping.

Congratulations on your bargains.   I love shopping at the thrift stores.  We have two closeby and I get lots of good deals there.  It is amazing how you can find clothing with the store tags still on it.  Now have fun food shopping with all your excess.

That is awesome!  I guess your DH has never met my BFF.
That woman prefers to either thrift store shop or make it herself.  I find myself intimidated by thrift stores; mostly because I am not easy to fit size wise anyway.  But she can clean up!  Last year she found a shirt at our Goodwill that was from France.  It looked super high end and was definitely not sold at our local mall...  Her DH does welding and ruins his work jeans quickly; so she refuses to buy him anything "new."  Can't say I blame her!   And what she can't find; she makes.  She is working on her sister's wedding dress now.  She made my DD the most adorable little apron ever for Christmas last year.  Girl has skillz!

Sometimes I envy her bargain hunting skills!  I could use a few warmer weather maternity tops; but I so do not want to go buy them at a regular store when I'll only get like 2 months wear out of them most likely...

Some of the best clothes and shoes I've ever had I got at thrift stores and charities (we grew up VERY poor).  I have to admit most of my clothes are thoroughly worn out before I can stand to discard them, but apparently some people think that worn once is worn out!

I love the thrift stores. I buy my sons jeans there since they grow so fast, I'm not spending even 20 bucks on new ones. 4.99 for levi's, and a few months back I paid 6 bucks for a pair of Abercrombies!!

I buy my daughter scarves there as well. She has a thing for funky colored ones, and there's always a huge selection. I've bought furniture there, since I'm not really picky about what goes into the bedrooms since nobody should be seeing that stuff anyway, it's always reasonably priced, sturdy, and in great shape. I got myself several pairs of running pants for 2 dollars each!! even if they last me a month-I think they owe me nothing, and they usually last a year! The only things I will NOT buy at the thrift is rugs (I have this unreasonable fear of fleas) and shoes (I worked for a Podiatrist and dealt with onychomycosis (to nail fungus) far too often-it can get through socks, you know!

Plus, depending on what time of year you get there...you can find some great stuff. For example...I am a rabid Jets fan, and sweatshirts and Jersey's are expensive. I got an entire wardrobe of Gang green stuff right after elimination last season-5 sweatshirts, 3 dollars each, 3 jersey's 4 dollars each, and 2 pairs of sweatpants at 4 dollars each. I bought everything Jets they had. I have someone in every size imaginable in this house!!

Good for you! The Thrift store isn't junk, it's good stuff that people are tired of, so why throw it away-someone else will want it, and it's usually for a charity!

Now, cut those coupons and get a savings card from the grocery store!

Wow, good bargains!
My last pair of jeans was from the second hand store. Very comfy and fashionable, and only $6.

We have a Plato's Closet near us. I got a pair of Gap jeans there that fit perfectly for $18. Must originally have been $70+.

Plato's closet is my 15 year olds' most favorite place to shop.  Go figure- she hates Goodwill and Salvation Army- but will buy clothes at a "designer" thrift store LOL.

I like it b/c they have the tiny sizes that you can't find anywhere else- and this kid is a 0 or 1 depending on what she's wearing.

Thanks! I was bragging about it at work today to some co-workers and was surprised that some of them were like "ewwww, you shop at goodwill??". Of course, most of them were kids just out of high school or college, still living at home with no real bills. The others are just snobs. I grew up wearing my cousins' hand-me-downs and have no problem wearing second hand clothes. I also know what I've donated to goodwill and many items still had the tags on them (back in the day when I had money and could "impulse shop"). So, they hung in a home instead of a store for a few years. No big deal!

Back early in high school, the friend I mentioned in my earlier post lived in a duplex where her older sister lived in the other half. Her sister worked at one of the thrift stores and she would bring home GREAT stuff all the time.  Many times I came home from her house with something new to me!  I guess that is where my friend picked up some of her skills.  But fashion has always been her thing anyway.  One of our other friends used to joke about "going shopping at Ms. Denise's house."

Yep, the story will change when they get out in the real world... Gaah I used to get so irritated with kids like that, still do.

BTW what do you do for work?

No shame in shopping thrifty, really. I mean, if someone wants to pay full price for designer clothes, be my guest- Too rich for my blood!!

I will say this though, I have found some equally good deals at WalMart, sometimes cheaper than GoodWill- Our Goodwill tends to mark things up a bit, so you have to know what you're looking at to know whether you got a good deal or not.

I work for a government contracted call center. It's not rocket science, if you can learn the material to answer questions you're hired. So we have everyone from young kids to retired people that just need extra income or something to do.
