The following is from the October 2011 edition of Orange Coast here in SoCal (Southern California).  There is a section where readers pose questions, and the magazine responds.  I thought you might find it of interest.

Question:  Disneyland is famous for its mice.  But is it also true they've got some hard-working felines?

Answer:  Strange as it seems, the Anaheim theme park apparently welcomes cats.  According to several Disneyland experts, after more than 100 feral cats were found in the rafters of Sleeping Beauty Castle, officials decided to let them stay, perhaps as a way to keep out unauthorized rodents.  Sources say Disney regulates the cat population, and we've seen and fed a few near the Hungry Bear Restaurant.

But Disneyland spokeswoman Michele Himmelberg disapproves:  "We treat all our animal guests to the same world-class service as our human guests.  To keep them healthy and happy, we ask that visitors please avoid picking them up, giving them food, or approaching them".

Wow that is great that they let them stay instead of kicking them out. I also love that they are making sure they don't breed to crazy numbers, and also advise people to not mess with or feed them.

You will probably never see them.

From what I understand, they corral them and keep them locked up and out of sight during business hours.

Yeah I doubt they would let feral cats run around when there are children everywhere.

FixNation is responsible for the TNR program. :D

Meet the 200 or so feral cats of Disneyland.

By day, they reside in five permanent feeding stations hidden within the park's 85 public acres.

But by night, they're on the prowl for any mice who haven't removed their costumes and gone home.

It's true. I didn't believe it at first, either.

Park officials decided in 1955 that feral lurkers from Orange County wouldn't be treated as nuisances; they made them employees.

Renovation of the Sleeping Beauty castle two years later quantified the problem: more than 100 cats were found living in the unused portion. Evil fleas then riddled the area, as well.

It's questionable whether any of the current night shift descended from those initial pilgrims. It's also questionable exactly how many there are today — how do you get 200 feral cats to attend a staff meeting?

Perhaps what's best to know about these kitties, despite the flea-ridden past, is that their health care plan is a model for humane care that would make Walt proud, including a spay or neuter, regular shots and good grub.

Not to mention lots of fun with Mickey.

Learn more about FixNation, which assists with the park' successful TSR (trap/spay/return) program, at this link.

I don't have a problem with these "working cats."  How about you?  It looks to me like they have the best of several worlds, lacking only human love and companionship, and I'm not sure true ferals miss that all that much.

I have no problem with it either, especially since they say they have a really successful spaying program.  I just hope there are enough unwanted rodents to keep them happy.
