A lady that I know through a dog breeding forum had posted a yesterday that she was looking for two longhaired cats - a male and a female - that were spayed/neutered to be mousers in her house. She lives in an older farmhouse and I guess the mice are starting to come in a lot more than they normally do.

Today I logged in to see that she had gone to the shelter and adopted a shorthaired female cat, about 8 years old, then went to some lady's house that does rescue and adopted two feral cats, a longhaired male (3 years) and a longhaired female (around 6 years). I guess she got the shorthaired one home before she went and got the longhaired ones and just let it go in her house. She said it was fine and pretty sweet. Then she brought home the longhaired ones and just let them go too. She said the shorthaired one freaked out and started hissing and spitting, the female longhaired one did the same and she got a couple good scratches on her leg and her palm. The longhaired male apparently just went to her bed and fell asleep on her pillow. She moved the shorthaired female to the bathroom and the longhaired female to a large crate.

I posted and gave her a quick run down of how to introduce cats properly, from what I've read on here, and information about taming feral cats. I also asked her why she would get them all in the same day and just throw them together and expect them to get along. These cats had just been through a major change and she thinks they're just going to adapt?!

She responded and said that I didn't understand and that these cats are insane. I guess her husband went to use the bathroom and the shorthaired on "attacked" him so he put it outside. Somehow the longhaired female got out of the crate and when they went to put her back in, she freaked out and "attacked' him as well, so he did the same thing with her and put her outside. She also said that the people that she adopted these cats from (a shelter and a lady that runs a rescue out of her home) said that the cats were good with other cats, dogs and kids and she's upset that they aren't. She said she's going to call them tomorrow so she can return them and suggest that they be put down because they are "vicious, obviously have some mental problems and shouldn't be around people".

I am so upset about this. Because of her idiocy two of the cats are outside, in a place where they've never been before, to fend for themselves. The shorthair one has apparently always been an indoor cat, while the longhair was a feral. I don't know how she thinks they're going to be able to catch them in the morning to return them. I honestly hope those cats take off and a caring person finds them. I don't understand why she would get feral cats when she was going to keep them indoors and not work with them, especially when you have young children!?

Those poor cats.

That's awful.

People who don't have cats just have no idea sometimes... Where I work (volo) we really screen people - I'm sure it's the same over there.  But you can't stop people from just going out and collecting cats from all over the place.

We need really intense pet education in schools.. If we can get the kids informed, perhaps in time people will truly understand what these animals are about.

I really understand how you feel.  It's so frustrating.

If she is a dog breeder then she should know to RESEARCH anything before bringing it into your home.

WOW, people are really awful, my heart breaks for these poor cats. I hope they find the perfect home with people who understand them

I can only but echo what both previous posters have said!

As awful as it sounds but what are the dogs like in her care if the cat situation is anything to go by! Cats are not the same as dogs
