Hi there,

I have 2 cats that I adopted from an animal sanctuary within a week of each other. I luv them to bits. They are both male and are so close you would swear they are brothers. Anyway, when I adopted them the animal sanctuary said that i must keep an eye on them as they had just had an attack of "sniffles" on most of the cats. after i had the first one for 2/3 days it was clear that he had the symptoms they described so i contacted them and they asked me to take him to their vet, which i did and received medication. He got better and a few days later I adopted the 2nd one who also showed symptoms after a couple of days. Again I contacted them and went to their vet who gave me medication and he got better and he said the other one would not be affected as he had just had medication recently. About a week later, they both came up with the same symptoms so i took them both back and he gave them the same medication along with some capsules this time and that seemed to do the trick.

the only thing is, every 2/3 days one or the other or both will get a blocked nose and you can hear they are battling to breath a little. it never goes as far as breathing through their mouth but u can hear that the nose is blocked. today they will have a blocked nose and tomorrow it will be fine. u can see that they are not sickly, they both drink and eat as normal but just have this blocked nose that keeps coming back every now and then. there is very little discharge from their eyes and not all the time and i havent seen any green snot coming out their nose but they do sneeze a few times a day when they have the blocked nose. sometimes it lasts 2 days and then its gone.

is there something i can do to help them and do i need to be worried?

Hi there welcome along to TCS, bless your heart for adopting these two kitties!

I am wondering maybe this could be feline herpes? or possible URI? Im not 100% sure though but I am sure that someone with more experience will be along to offer more advice than I can give you soon :)

Deworming done?

Trying to get some clue... Not properly deworming can give symptoms as from hindrance in the respiratory. (=worms in there too).  Even properly done deworming may need a second dosis.

You can surely discuss this with that shelter, they surely knows which dewormer they did use.

Some dewormers "should" suffice with one dose, other does need a couple three roudns.

Welcome to TCS :D :hugs: :clap: So glad you found us!! :wavey:

Agree that deworming is a must. Profender http://www.petparents.com/show.aspx/products/profender a spot-on dewormer and easy to apply and usually works in a one time dosage. I always give it again, though, three week's later for complete eradication of parasites. Although I don't think that is why your cats have an URI. Could be a herpes virus and I would suggest getting L-Lysine It mixes very easily in wet food and is well taken by all cat's. No bitter taste! Start by giving 500 mg. 1/4 tsp. twice daily for about seven days until symptoms improve. Then go to 250 mg. 1/8 tsp. twice daily. They can stay on this until such time as two week's have gone by without any symptoms. I really think that this is just a virus and the Lysine will help.

If they get completely blocked and are mouth breathing. I would recommend a vaporizer a few times a day - maybe put them in a bathroom during this time. Also run the shower extremely hot to get the moisture/steam going in the room too. What antibiotic did the vet put them on? Thank you for rescuing them
