I started working with my first feral cat almost 2 yrs ago. I had no one to show me the ropes, I just did what I thought was right. It all worked out today she is a sweet cat and lives inside my home. It did take me almost a year to get her to trust before I captured her.

I took her to the vet and got her spayed and all her shots and testing..I am so thankful she was negative for all disease. I now help out with 85 feral cats in Gaston County and to date all of them except 5 are spayed and neutered. This did not happen overnight because we either pay all the cost...or volunteer at vet office to earn a free spay/neuter surgery.

Yesterday was my second time ever getting a feral to befriend me they usually stay their distance and only see them late at night.

I have been buying a few insulated small dog houses and filling with straw a few a month. The other cats who do not have a dog house yet...are sleeping in those white stryofoam coolers. I ask the vet for them....they are free.....I cut the sides off and put both together and duct tape them very good...then tape on 3 ply black plastic and fill with straw....It makes for a warm or cool house...The best part it is free. You do need to make sure you put them near a tree...sometimes I will put a brick or rock on top to help keep them from blowing away......

I am still learning all about caring for feral cats and stray cats. I am so happy to have found this site. There are only 2 of ladies in Gaston County working on these 85 cats...so it ca sometimes get you burned out. I keep telling myself for every cat I spay it saves hundreds from being born...so that helps bring me back from the blink of burn out to remember that.

I live in Gaston County NC, between Gastonia and Kings Mountain in a rural subdivision of only 4 streets....pretty safe here from traffic and we do have woods around for the cats to hide. None of my cats go without shelter. I have made or purchased homes for everyone of them. I do place them in the woods so it not bring attention to the cats.....

Thank you for adding me to this wonderful group.

Welcome to TCS!

It's awesome to hear how many kitties you have been able to help!  I have never heard of making shelters from those coolers.
