litter boxes

I'm trying to train our 8 week old kitten to use the litter box.  I have 2 boxes in the house.  How long should I keep the 2nd box?  She uses both right now but I eventually want her to use the one in the laundry room only.

The general rule is to have one more litter box than you have cats. So, you want to have two litterboxes for your one cat. Lots of cats don't like to pee and poop in the same litterbox, and it will help prevent improper elimination outside the box if you have multiple boxes set out.

I agree that it's better to keep two boxes if at all possible. At a minimum, I would leave them both where they are until she's been totally reliable for a month or two, then slowly move the "extra" one over until it's next to the main box. If that goes well (no accidents) you can try removing one and see how she does.

Boxes in the laundry room are not a good idea..... They are an accident waiting to happen..... and when they do, it is not easy to fix.
The reason for that is the kitty can go potty while the machine is working, and a sudden noise can startle them - from that time on they will grow scared of the litterbox, and will go potty elsewhere

I know it works well for humans, but it it shows to be, more often than not, problematic for a cat.....

I realize laundry rooms are the greatest but our household is different....no kids, just my husband and I, and we do laundry all at once on the weekend.  Plus she has been in the laundry with us with the machines on and has gone in the litter. Other than in the basement, there is no other place.  Even our bathroom is not a good place. 

Right now we have it in the laundry room and in the dining room.  She uses both but has been going back to the laundry room.
