A few weeks ago I found an adorable lost cat in my yard. I got her checked she was healthy but neglected. & she wasn't spayed. So I set up an appointment with the vet but she got into heat & escaped for 3 days. And She just came back.. Can I spay her now or could she be pregnant?  :(

Yes, she can (and should) be spayed now. Before she gets any farther along in the pregnancy. When is the appointment?

I would certainly treat her for fleas, probably with Revolution, which takes care of ear mites, too, I believe, and possibly some worms.

He gave her a pill for worms & he checked for fleas and ear mites. She is fine. But he says she is too weak to be spayed now. He recommended I wait a week & get back to him for a check up. She is only 5 months old & under weight. She weighs 4.5 pounds :(

Poor little baby!  This is why we tell people to spay as early as possible.

I named her Cookie :3 lol I'll take her to another vet tomorrow for a second opinion just to be safe & guilt free. Its really sad how ppl just dump their pets like old toys :(

If she's not healthy enough to be spayed, then she's definitely not healthy enough to carry a litter, and a spay later in pregnancy will be even harder on her. . .I wouldn't wait any longer than 2 weeks to spay her. Hopefully you can get her fattened up enough in that time to make the operation safer. I would put her on kitten food, as much canned and dry as she'll eat. It's a tough situation because no matter what you do it's risky for the poor girl :(. :vibes: for her to get healthy soon!

I am really confused :'( I don't wanna pick the wrong decision & hurt her. But if she doesn't get stronger I don't think I will spay her.

I will have better time to get her healthier during the pregnancy. but if she is weak & I spay her the anesthesia & the incision could really harm her. Is a week or two really enough to make her stronger?

A pregnancy will be much harder on her than the anesthesia. Carrying a litter, let alone caring for them, takes so much out of a cat. I really think a spay ASAP is the best choice. Maybe next week?

Most vets here say that as long as the cat is two pounds and breathing well, a spay should be ok. I hope she gets well enough to get spayed right away, because she might not do well with a pregnancy :( It's hard to get them healthier when a pregnancy sucks the nutrients out of them.

And yes, a week might be enough to get her better for surgery! She's so lucky to have found you!

I truly would have her spayed as well. She should be young and healthy enough to recover from it just fine. Have bloodwork done pre-surgery to be sure everything is in normal levels.

I agree - she is very young to carry a litter to term. Spaying will be the better option.

If you feed a good quality wet food like Blue Buffalo Wilderness Kitten Formula, she will get much stronger and healthier in a week or two.

Please keep us posted!
