My 4 year old female Molly who weighs 8 1/2 lbs had dental work done this week. By routine more then 12 hour fasting bloodwork we found out her cholesterol and triglycerides are elevated. Her fPL and urine are normal. She is healthy and eats well. The vet thinks Molly doesn't absorb the fat in food very well and wants her to go on a low fat diet. She was eating wellness core kibble and wellness canned chicken. The vet seems to think Molly will need something with corngluten in it. I never have like any of those grains and have tried to feed my cats the lower or grainfree foods. There is a Innovane low fat food which comes in cans and kibble. What do you think? any suggestions? I am at a loss what to feed my little girl.Thank you.

Wow!  I'm kind of shocked that he wants you to feed her something with corn gluten in it...
Agreed. That is an extreme "solution" IMO.

Sounds like choosing Fritos for lunch rather than a Turkey Breast on Whole Wheat.

Is it possible that she had some food stashed somewhere or somehow found something to eat during that 12 hour period?

Here are a few reasons why I avoid Corn Gluten in my diet, and I would never let my Kitties eat it:

~ It is a byproduct of the corn wet milling process, and is a natural pre-emergent weed preventer and nitrogen fertilizer.

~ Corn is the second most commonly genetically modified food on the planet (soy is #1)

~ Corn Gluten contains MSG.

~ It has been shown to cause inflammation, which could be worse than her current issues.

She is already eating very good foods...

The first thing I would do is to increase her exercize / play time.

A Supplement with Omega 3 oil can help to lower triglycerides

I'd try the ideas above and get another blood test in a month or two.

No problem

I had been using Innova Reduced Fat wet and dry as part of my kitties' diet before I switched them to Grain Free.

I think they are better than most brands of Reduced Fat Food - they do have a lot of carbs, but when you remove the fat, it must either be replaced with protein or carbs, and carbs are much cheaper.

Here is the info for the dry:

Ingredients:

Turkey, Chicken, Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice, Chicken Meal, Potatoes, Rice, Herring, Pea Fiber, Natural Flavors, Chicken Fat, Apples, Whole Raw Carrots, Whole Pasteurized Milk, Fish Oil, Sunflower Oil, Alfalfa Sprouts, Egg, Cranberries, Viable Naturally Occurring Microorganisms, Taurine, Chicory Root Extract, Vitamins/Minerals

Analysis:

Crude Fat (min)9.00%
Ash (max)5.50%
Crude Fiber (max) 4.50%
Magnesium (max) 0.08%
Crude Protein (min)32.00%
Moisture (max)10.00%

And for the wet:

Ingredients:

Turkey, Turkey Broth, Chicken Broth, Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Salmon, Herring, Potatoes,Carrots, Apple Fiber, Natural Flavors, Whole Eggs, Carrageenan, Apples, Alfalfa Sprouts, Guar Gum, Sodium Phosphate, Skim Milk, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate, Choline Chloride, Cranberries, Inulin, Potassium Chloride, Taurine, Sunflower Oil, Herring Oil, DL Methionine, Beta Carotene, Vitamins/Minerals

Analysis:

Crude Fiber (max)0.26%
Moisture (max) 77.47%
Crude Protein (min)10.09%
Crude Fat (min)4.90%
Ash2.34%

These are not "perfect" but I'd much rather feed my kitties Brown Rice, Potatoes and Peas than variations of Corn, Wheat, and Soy.
