Makes me shiver but does anyone believe the 2012 theory that the World will end?

I remember when it turned 2000. I was 16...Me and a bunch of other people stayed at a friends house. When Midnight hit, my friends father cut the power and we all started freaking out. He turned it back on a few moments later and we realized it was just like any other new years.

My friend made a joke that the only reason that the Mayan calendar says that is because they ran out of paper. LOL. :)

No, the world isn't going to end. From what I understand, the Mayan calender ends just like ours ends on 12/31...then it starts over again. The Mayans just had a reeeeaalllly long calender. Or maybe they just got tired of writing?

I was living in Guam in 1999 but was home in Maryland visiting my family over New Years. I called my boyfriend (who was still in Guam) around 3:00pm 12/31, which was around 1:00am January 1st their time, just to make sure A) Guam was still there, B) the phones still worked and C) the computer still booted up. He wasn't real impressed with the early morning wake up call but I felt better knowing that the world was still up and running. Same thing is going to happen here come 12/22/12. So start saving for Christmas!

Nope.  Although there is a better bet, right now.  Astronomers have just discovered an asteroid, about 400 feet in diameter, that they predict will hit earth in 2040.

http://news.discovery.com/space/asteroid-impact-hazard-2040-120228.html
I remember that something similiar to this was predicted years ago, and the impact of this other asteroid  was going to distroy the entire planet..  They even ran this story on the national news, and then a few days later they had to admit the prediction was false.

So no, I don't think anything bad is going to happen this year.

I'm only 24 and I've already lived through more supposed apocalypses than I can count. I remember one in 2001, my freshman year of high school. It was some time in September, and I remember the day after the fake apocalypse, the guy who predicted it said, "Oh, wait, this is actually going to happen in two years." That's the guy who predicted the rapture this last year, who again said he miscalculated. These people are just looking for media attention.

This particular apocalypse only has the vast amount of media attention because it's the oldest 'prophecy' out there. Also, they are completely misconstruing the facts. The Mayans did NOT predict the end of the world, they simply ended their calendar. Do we die every year at 12:00 AM January 1st? No. The Mayan calander has gone through four of these extremely long cycles, with this next time being the fifth. Doesn't it make sense that a culture that worshipped the stars and prided themselves on their absolute obsession with mathematics would have made this really accurate, long-range calendar simply because they could? It's why we would make one nowadays. They lived in a rich, plentiful farming area and had lots of time on their hands. It stands to reason that they would need leisure activities.

I am too, & I agree.

Um...No.

I am a Christian, and the Bible tells us that not even the angels will know the day or the hour that the world will end.  I believe that with all of my heart.

As for why God would let the world end...The world has turned from God and become full of evil.  There will come a time when God will no longer allows the evil to rule and He will bring the day of judgement upon us (every knee will bow, every tongue confess that He is Lord).  He has proven this intolerance for evil throughout the Bible.  Of course, the Flood in the days of Noah is one time...but there is also Sodom and Gomorrah.

Someone posted this on fb:

“There have been about 514 Leap Years since Caesar created it in 45BC. Without the extra day every 4 years, today would be July 28, 2013. Also, the Mayan calendar did not account for leap years…so technically the world should have ended 7 months ago.” There, that clears things up for those of you who have been panicking this whole time.... interesting...."

But, in Creation, God made a pact with Noah to never destroy the earth again. I think if God is tolerating all of the evil that runs rampant on this earth right now, he is keeping his pact with Noah, and it is our job to destroy evil (and not the earth in the process) I believe also that God loves everyone, even those lambs that have seemingly left the fold. Sodom and Gomorrah was only one evil city, with the flood it was everything.

I do not believe that God will destroy the earth. I think Man is accomplishing destruction of it pretty thoroughly on our own. I'm pretty outspoken about my intolerance for what I perceive as evil, and as far as that goes, I'm pretty darned tolerant.

There have been around 514 leap years since first created in 45 BC by Caesar. Without that extra day, today would be around July 2013, seven months after the world should have ended. Also, the Mayans did not account for this extra day, so this is clearly just a myth

Actually, the leap year theory isn't correct. Mayans didn't use actual dates, they used the moon to keep track of days instead. The Mayan year is completely different from the Gregorian years we use today, so December 21, 2012 is still the correct day of the end of the Mayan cycle. That being said, I still don't believe anything will happen. When I was visiting the Mayan ruins a few years back, I asked my tour guide what they will be doing on 12/21, and he said that no tourists will be allowed and the area will be closely monitored by those in the field. Kinda weird!

The Mayans had 3 calendars they used, and in one of them, the "Haab," they calculated that there was just over 365 days in a year. So wouldn't the leap year theory still be correct?

Well, not really. Kinda on the fence..again. It was supposed to end May 21st of last year and then it was supposed to be God destroying the Earth October 21st last year. It was predicted by Mr. Harold Camping. He of course had a stroke and no longer is doing Family Radio. Another false prophet is and thinks the world is going to end tomorrow (Chris McCan)... Did I believe it would last year? Yes, but not sure about now. Plus the Solar Flares with the sun aren't effecting us.. YET. And, probably has nothing to do with the world ending just yet.

It may end or it may not, who really knows. All these predicitons from people who have studied the bible for YEARS don't even know when God is coming as it says in the bible no man knows the day OR the hour. So how can they know or us for that matter? JMO so please respect it and don't flame me for it. ;)

Well, that prediction was made before Leap Year was made official into the calendar, so according to accurate calculations, INCLUDING leap year day when it occurred, the end of the world should have been 7 months ago..... We are still here.

Nothing is going to happen.  The Mayan's were wrong.  The basis for their end-of-the-world hypothesis was that the earth would basically expire.  That's not going to happen.  The earth has survived countless volcanoes, earthquakes, asteroid collisions, nuclear war, and a ton of other natural and man-made disasters.  It's not going anywhere any time soon.  100,000 years from now, the human race may be extinct, but the earth will still be here.  It'll shake us off like a bad cold.  There's nothing to worry about.

I don't think they were trying to predict the end of the world. I thought their calendar was simply ending this year, then starting over.

LuvMyParker, that's what I heard as well! All the Mayans were doing, apparently, was just starting a new age...but I think some people took it overboard
