Makes me shiver but does anyone believe the 2012 theory that the World will end?

My daughter broached the subject tonight, she is scared, very scared and I must admit that I am a bit too. There has been so much attention that the World may end this year. My gut feeling is that so many times people have "predicted" and it has never happened, For some reason this one seems to have much more coverage than other predictions. A bit like the millenium. I don't believe it but still makes me worried. I am not religious but I believe that if there is a God that created this Earth why would he let it perish? And also if there was something threatening the Earths existence surely NASA and other other professional bodies would know this?I say to my daughter why would governments e.t.c.... be planning for 2013? I will be glad when this year is out of the way but then I suppose there will be then another "prediction" and another worry

The world is not ending this year - it's a ridiculous rumor with no basis in fact. Relax.

Good and good for the previous reply, just why is everyone making such a big deal out of this years prediction? Even Britney Spears has done a song about it.x

The whole 2012 thing started, I believe, with the Mayan Calendar, and the jury is really out on whether it actually says anything of the kind anyway.  The concept has then been embraced by everyone from religious groups and the new age movement to conspiracy theorists.

I'm one of those believers in a kind of universal consciousness (Jung talks about it).  I have a feeling that if a state of unrest permeates the world we can all feel it... it can take on a life of its own (A case of careful what you think!)  It isn't helped by the fact that there is great difficulty in the world.. fighting, financial issues, huge environmental problems, etc.

I honestly think we need to be less concerned with prophesies, and more with caring for each other and our earth.  Fear won't help, but using a difficult time to unite, will.

On a really flippant note, a friend of mine said to me "if the Mayans could predict the end of the earth, how come they didn't see the Spanish coming?"

The Mayan calendar was written in cycles, and where one cycle ended another began. Finding the end of one cycle means nothing. (Seriously, how could the Mayans, back then, possibly know when the world will end? It's pretty ludicrous when you think about it.) I was under the impression that it was Hollywood that picked up on this and sensationalized the idea with the 2012 movie. Christians can take comfort in the fact that, according to God, nobody knows when the world will end, not even the angels. Thinking along those lines, this has got to be the safest year EVER, with so many people thinking it's the last one!

Some just feed off fear. This whole 2012 thing is just a way to freak people out and make some money along the way. The Mayans couldn't predict the world any better than anyone else. You and your daughter don't need to be afraid. I am 100% sure the world is not just going to explode or whatever they say it will in December. I know its hard not to get roped into it but take a few moments and research the Mayans and the calendar people are basing this whole theory on. It is not ending...just starting over. Much like ours does after December. Like SwampWitch said, NO ONE but God knows.

Um...No.

I am a Christian, and the Bible tells us that not even the angels will know the day or the hour that the world will end.  I believe that with all of my heart.

As for why God would let the world end...The world has turned from God and become full of evil.  There will come a time when God will no longer allows the evil to rule and He will bring the day of judgement upon us (every knee will bow, every tongue confess that He is Lord).  He has proven this intolerance for evil throughout the Bible.  Of course, the Flood in the days of Noah is one time...but there is also Sodom and Gomorrah.

Nope.

Someone posted a joke cartoon on Facebook a while back that made me laugh.  I just did a search for it and came up with this site: http://bizarrocomic.blogspot.com/2009/12/countdown-to-catastrophe.html.  Looks like where it started.  Don't let media hype or all the "talk" about it scare you.  If the world DID end; what could you do about it?  Do you walk around every day fearing you might die tomorrow?  What good does it do?  You can't add a day to your life by worrying really.  Living with no regrets doesn't mean living in fear.  It's not good for you and gains you no extra time in the end.  Life is precious whether the world ends tomorrow, in December or in the year 9865585.

A few months ago I was chatting with a guy I knew from when DH and I were in a singles group together.  He was saying how in high school he would "predict" every night the return of Jesus so it wouldn't happen.
We got a good chuckle out of it.

You have all put my mind at rest a bit. I will still be glad when that date has gone lol. I was more worried as the predicted date is the day before my birthday so I wouldn't be able to celebrate my 30th

Not in the slightest. My co-worker and I have discussed this latest version of the end of the world and nope, not going to happen.  Although there were some pretty respected scientists who were able to "fit" some recent events into the whole 2012 scenario. But that's all it was.

The asteroid now? Well, that's more plausible than the 2012 thing; I had just read about the asteroid this past week.

Nope, don't believe it.

Though I did hear a joke that Snooki from Jersey Shore is due to deliver her baby on 12/21/12, then it says "Well played, Mayans, well played" :lol3:

I remember when it turned 2000. I was 16...Me and a bunch of other people stayed at a friends house. When Midnight hit, my friends father cut the power and we all started freaking out. He turned it back on a few moments later and we realized it was just like any other new years.

The world was going to end so many times before this, yet we're all still here.
