How long after nesting starts?

So, yesterday Sophie started to show signs of nesting. If the lady is correct on her breeding..she's due today. I went to spend some time with her before going to bed. (it's 1:15am) I noticed she'd been nesting a bit (I have her in my daughter's bedroom). There isn't a real good spot for her to have them..so I emptied a low tote and put a towel in it and she jumped right in and laid down. I've been sitting with her, rubbing her belly and she's purring away. At one point, she dug at the corner and nestled in.

I know every cat is a bit different but does nesting mean 24 to 48 hours or could it still be days away?

I think I'll set my alarm anyway for every couple hours to check in on her.

Well, I set my alarm for 5:00 and she was fine..no mucus...nothing. I got up at 9:00 and we have two adorable babies so far. I can feel movement still so ....

so far we have an adorable white with black spots and one that looks like mama. Haven't checked for sex yet. The black and white was first and the other must have been fairly new cause was still damp and searching for a nipple...

will update as the day goes on!

Alright...I just had a scary experience.. So, mama was contracting and contracting and it's kinda dark in the box and I see a black wet tail.  Mama starts turning in the box and is licking so I lift her tail to see if the baby is all out and making sure she's licking the membranes off when I notice his head is still in her! But she's not contracting anymore!! She licking the baby but all I can think of ... he can't breath! So, I'm gently trying to pull in hopes she will push. Seconds are ticking by and even the kitten is stuggling and putting his paws up as to push his head out. I can't pull too hard for obvious reasons and he's gone limp. FINALLY his head pops out and I don't wait for momma cause she's licking but obviously doesn't realize he needs to breathe NOW so I rip the bag off his head and grab a piece of towel..he still hasn't moved...I wipe his face and he opens his mouth. So I wipe and stimulate...mama's licking her bum...then I remembered someone on here said to cup them in your hands and do a swinging motion between the legs. Mama hasn't chewed his cord yet so I rip it with my fingers. As I am swinging he finally starts to heartily cry.

So, I quickly give his back to mom who begins to lick him. Did I overreact?  Would he have died if his head stayed in her too long?

I hope I did the right thing. I panicked..

Going to go check on him now...

She just had number four... Number three is doing well and has finally suckled. The first kitten is spotted and I believe a boy, the second like momma, a dark tabby with white, third is black and white almost tuxedo and the fourth is black on top and white face and belly. Not sure if there's a fifth...can't feel any but she could be the horn that's underneath her. I hope she just has four...it's a good number :)

No no, you did just so. A school example of excellent presence and emergency stand in.

So, I think it's just four. Everyone is happily suckling and Mama is doing well. I offered her some water and she almost drank the bowl dry. I replaced the icky wet towel with a nice soft fleece blanket and everyone is now dry and toasty.  I'll post pics soon.

Here's a pic of all four. Not 100% on boys/girls. The mostly black one is def a boy. The tabby a girl and the jury is still out on the spotted and tuxedo ones.

Above is the link to the birth of the third kitten. The one that got her head stuck. It's kind of dark...

The teats at the back have more milk than the ones nearer the front and the kittens know that in some sort of way!  BTW 8 is the normal number of nipples, but a few cats have different numbers.

I know that some teats have more milk, and also that the kittens like to mark nipples and use the same ones over and over. I've also noticed that with my foster, she has some nipples that are more distended than others (the ones near  her armpits are quite small). That being said, my theory this week has been that since they are blind, one way besides smell of finding a nipple is finding where someone is already sucking. If you can knock someone off, you've got a guaranteed meal! (until you then get knocked off by someone with the same mentality)
