Thought this could use its own post since so many come here asking questions about rehabilitation vs. age.

After 9 months total of working with him outside and then inside, this is Mr. Jinx. He's approximately 8-12 YEARS old. I've known him for less than a year, and he's been indoors for less than 4 months.

He had every sign of complete feral behavior, though I think somewhere in the long gone past he was at minimum fed by someone. He did not and would not let me a) see him - he'd immediately hide under my house b) be in the same yard as him c) eat anywhere near me.

Eventually after constant feeding, he'd let me watch him eat for a minute through a glass door. That took ages.

Then I started sitting outside about 30 feet from him without ever trying to touch him or move closer.

Then when he started moving closer to me, I would spend hours outside reading books.

After that, he eventually would sit next to me. We'd have some eye contact. If I tried anything, I'd get a serious swat - even if it was food.

He eventually rubbed me but still no pets from me.

We then moved on to petting for about a second.

We then moved to petting only if he could not see my hand.

We then moved on to several setbacks, including a few more attacks.

We then moved on to closer bonding, to where, one night, I watched him sit in my yard completely exposed in freezing rain, just watching me in the kitchen, waiting for me to come sit with him (which I did, and we both got drenched). I knew then it was time to bring him in.

I lured him into the kitchen to eat while DH closed the door behind him, and the rest is history.

He was and is worth every bit of time spent. So whenever someone says if a cat is over a certain age it's just "impossible" - look at this picture.

He really is THE best. He is also the most affectionate cat I've ever known. Every time I sit down, he sits on my lap. I left my tee shirt on the couch and came home to find him on it. We're the best of friends. I feel like the lucky one.

And that you are :hugs: :heart2: Although, I think Mr. Jinx is also the lucky one in having found you :hugs: It goes both ways

Love that part about sitting in the freezing rain.  It's like from a movie.

Thanks everyone!

It's been a journey.

And the rain thing was JUST like that. Water was literally dripping from his fur as he watched me, hoping I'd come out. And I did. And I tried to dry him but he bit the towel LOL.

So we just sat and got wet. But it was SO hard for me to go inside and leave him in that weather, which is when we decided it was time. He loves being an indoor kitty. Since his run-in last week with being lost, he's stayed as far away from the doors as possible.

Your story is so wonderful and so inspiring.  Thank-you SO much for sharing!

..and look at your cute puppy picture....  Pup is sitting on the couch as innocent as can be as kitty watches the shopping channel and slips the wallet in front of pup, "not me its not me!" says kitty pretending to be asleep and the doorbell rings with your delivery!

Was your kitty friends right away or did it take a long time to reach cuddle stage?

Yes, ha! I left my phone on the couch for his use. LOL

They were definitely not buddies right away. When Jinx was outside, I used to let the other guys into the yard. They'd spy on each other from a distance, but never get *too* close, except for Ramses, who would not care too much about invading spaces.

Jinx was hissy with him at first for sure, but over time they've become friendly. Jinx was never really unfriendly to any other animal - being outside in the old neighborhood he had to coexist with so many other creatures, including an infinite amount of cats. He was standoffish but not mean.

Now they sit around each other constantly. Jinx is also pretty friendly with the other cats. Little Lady still hisses at him, but he lets her be alpha cat - her and her whole 6 pounds.

Thanks everyone!

Just a quick update... Since Mr. Jinx's trying 2 days outside, he's been even more of an indoor house kitty. Meaning he doesn't hide as much as he did and practically never runs away from sounds now. He even sits with DH when I'm NOT AROUND! He really loves his life with us, and we are so thankful to have him. He is my perpetual lap kitty!

I am sure that those two days being lost outside were just a nightmare for Mr. Jinx and a reminder of his old life :nervous:. He was probably scared straight and never wants out again :cross:. I am thrilled to hear he is so well loved and is now your constant companion and lap cat . You are so lucky..... They are not all lap cat's :D. He is a special one, for sure
