I agree! That was not my intention.

I rarely go to that end of the site, I am behind the scenes in the database, so yes, you are right, after reading the comments I was slightly offended and went to check out my miswording, the dropdown tab is not labelled cat nutrition, it's health care, as RAD65 stated, then cat food.

Under the big bold blue tab on the left labelled LEARN MORE, the next line is visit this great site.

Why would I try to get readers to the site? It's not like members here are neighbors, or even close by for volunteering/adopting, etc. (??)

I just remember being pretty impressed with lots of eye-opening info.

I guess I should have went there myself and posted only the cat food ratings site address (that I didn't have memorized) instead of jumping in to offer a bit of help.

SORRY!

I was enjoying this newly found site too...(TCS)

catwoman707, please don't be sad

I love cats, I love women, I really love catwomen... heck, I even love the number 7 in any combination!

We didn't think you were evil or anything...

the links you described just weren't quite as you had remembered them... it was an innocent mistake - no harm done!

And, sorry if I hurt your feelings!

I was mostly jesting, too. Obviously anyone working hard for a rescue wants to get the name of that rescue out there. I never thought you were purposely doing that.

Thank you both. You brought tears to my eyes.

Extra sensitive today, I discovered something last night that shocked and hurt me to my core, and I can't share it, of course it's about cats, but not nice, not at all. And I don't know what, if anything to do about it. Not fair to share though.

Upsetting enough that I hardly slept.

Thanks again girls, I really appreciate your msgs!

Hey, I'm a guy - guys can love Kitties too ya know! Plus, that fact makes my CatWoman fetish a little less disturbing to some people, including my Wife...

I'm concerned about the upsetting cat related discovery you made...

I take Cat Welfare very seriously - if there is some kind of abuse or mistreatment occurring, please let us know about it.

There are steps that can be taken to correct most problems.

:hugs: I see you found the SOS Forum. :heart3:

This is, in fact, a site to share these things with. So many of us TNR and work with and/or rescue ferals, sadly, many of us have encountered the very worst in people. :(

I'm okay-ish enough about it, also see that I can, in fact tell-all here, so I will share my latest stories of good and evil in their appropriate forums.

Thanks again for the support, I am so happy to have found TCS.

 Not to hijack the thread further, but that's really the point of the different forums. One of the really sensitive issues is abuse, so for people who are feeling emotionally vulnerable, it makes it easy to avoid threads they don't want to see. :heart2:

I was talking to my vet today and just asked her opinion on cats and moisture. She told me as long as the cat is eating a good kibble (Science Diet according to her) and drinking water its fine. That feeding all canned food is horrible for their teeth etc.

Is this true? Could someone explain why cats need more moisture in their diet compared to lets say a dog?
Whether dogs are carnivores or omnivores is highly debatable. They are descendants of the wolf who are carnivores. I usually present it that dogs have a carnivorous background but have shifted to become more omnivorous during domestication. Cats on the other hand have remained a true carnivore and are actually obligate or strict carnivores that require animal based foods in their diets to provide their unique nutritional needs.

Cats are wired to get most of their moisture from the foods they eat.  Dogs, OTOH, will run to the water bowl and lap up an entire bowl of water after playing outdoors. Some cats enjoy water and will drink plenty of it.  Others not so much.  I personally have no issue with an all kibble diet for your cat if he/she is getting plenty of water to hydrate itself.  A cat not getting enough water can develop a multitude of health issues up to and including UTIs.  Another consideration is kibble is calorie/carb dense which can lead to obesity and possibly diabetes if the ingestion of the kibble is not monitored.  That said, an all kibble diet is okay as long as you monitor the cats intake and your kitty is drinking enough water.

Waltham Center for Pet Nutrition suggests an 80% wet to 20% dry diet for cats.  I *try* to go by this guideline but I'm sure I'm not exact because I do free feed the cats kibble. Their kibble is Nutro Max Indoor Chicken.   I only do this because none of them over eat.  Their wet meals are fed twice daily. Their wet consists of Nutro Natural Choice varieties and I will throw in other brands of premium wet to give them different tastes and textures.  So far I have had very healthy cats with no health or oral health issues. My oldest is 15 and the youngest is about 3.

My vet is oddly mum about the nutrition issue, but if he told me to feed dry, I would point blank say, "My cats only eat canned food. What kind, how much, how often, what else to do to help their teeth, etc., is up for discussion, but the dry vs. wet issue is NOT."

Science Diet is garbage. They have the vets brainwashed.

Numerous cat parents have said that their senior cats ate kibble regularly all their lives with no ill effect.  My very healthy young cat loves kibble, but gets wet several times a week.

Hey I know you're right, I know a healthy senior cat who eats dry all the time.

I personally won't give my cats dry though because it contains so many things other than meat and nutrients, and dry food has a lot of fiber. Cats don't need fiber. Mine can't that much fiber or they will poop blood. And I believe trying to stick close to what we evolved with even though we (our family), lacking infinite time and money and intelligence although we try very hard, compromise a lot in this fake world we live in.

If you have to feed them dry because you're busy, go for it. I used to do the same thing sometimes but I stopped because my cats had that problem :(

I feed dry to her because she enjoys it; she likes it probably because she is still a kitten and that's all they fed to her at the rescue center where I adopted her.  That said, I've made an effort to purchase good quality varieties of dry and wet to ensure her long-term health.  I don't begrudge a cat owner trying to save money on food costs, but for me it's worthwhile and important to buy "premium" food and cut back elsewhere in my personal budget.  Of course, pet food manufacturers toss around the word premium all the time, in dubious fashion.  And I would never blow the mortgage money on pet food.  LOL.  And believe me, whenever I see a high quality brand at deep discount, i jump on it.  Dadgumit, I've bought cans of usually high-priced Newman's Own cat food at the local Family Dollar store.
