The vet has me giving Swanie L-Lysine because he was getting upper respitory infections.  It seems to be doing some good, he does sneeze once in awhile, but not like he was.  So I was wondering, is this something I can give him long term?  Are their any side effects I should watch out for?

By the way, I think he's addicted to it.  I put his food in his bowl at night and he won't eat it until I sprinkle the white powder on it.  He starts to purr the minute he sees the jar.

I give Perla - my herpes kitty - L-Lysine everyday. When she has a flare-up I give 500 mg. twice daily. For maintenance I keep her on 250 mg. twice daily. If her eye is not weepy at all - I will go to 125 mg. twice daily. There were just a few threads recently about Lysine here in the Health Forum. If you just use the search box - they will all come up for you to read. :D As far as I know - there is no long-term downside of using Lysine everyday if needed for a cat. :wavey:

I give all my kitties Lysine twice daily.  Hannah has herpes and needs it; it just helps the others so they get it.

I had asked about it before and was given info for a product to order online, but I would like to buy it in a store. Are there any farm or health stores that I can buy the powder at?

This is what I got from the vet - Viralys - L-Lysine in a palatable base.  It's a white powder and must taste good because Swanie is addicted.  He will eat it right out of the scoop - and often tries to as I'm sprinking it on the food.  Cindy likes it too, but not to the extent Swanie does.  The vet told me to sprinkle a scoop on his food twice a day (dry or wet), so that would be 1000 mg.

I have read a lot of the stuff about it on here, and elsewhere on the web. I just wanted to see if anyone knew if there were long term issues that  might crop up from giving it to the kitties - If it's helping him, I'm glad to keep giving it to him - but I don't want to cause any harm down the road.

There are no known side effects from using it long-term as far as I know.  Hannah's been on it since 2007.  Many humans who suffer from herpes, shingles, and fever blisters take it daily to keep those from flaring up, too.

The possible problem with longterm high-dosage is that L0Lysine may interact adversely with some nutrrients int he body, for example preventing taurine, essential for cats' health, being absorbed properly. So it may be a good idea to only give 1000mg for a short while, until the cat's condition improves, then cut it back till you find a good maintenance dose, often around 250 mg or less. But the jury is stil out on whether there are actually any long term side effecs. I give one of mine 250 mg daily to control eye problems, and that works well.

Thanks!  I don't give him the whole 1000, never have.  The instructions say 2 rounded scoops and I've been doing a level scoop once a day. I think I'll cut back on that too as long as he's doing okay.
