I have an older cat who has always had issues with UTIs & crystals. I've had her on Friskies Special Diet but I'm thinking it may not be the best quality for her. I'm in the process of switching my dogs to a new food & was looking into it for my cats as well.

I'm doing Blue Buffalo for the dogs & found great reviews but have had a hard time finding out anything on the cat food.

Anyone know whether it's a good food or not? If not, what kind do you recommend?

Hello and welcome

I'm not a Feline Nutritionist, but I do a lot of research, and try to give them the best foods I can find and afford.

The best thing I know of that you can do to help cats avoid crystals and UTIs is to increase their water intake.

I would try to eliminate dry food altogether if possible, or at least minimize it. Adding a little warm water to the canned food will help to increase their H20 intake as well.

I have read that fish can contribute to UTIs, so I would eliminate or minimize the amount of fish in her diet. I'd stick with chicken and turkey.

You are already on the right track looking at a high quality food like Blue. Undoubtedly she will do better with it than she is on the Friskies. (But due to financial constraints, I feed my Ferals Friskies cans most of the time.) My indoor cats have a little Blue Wilderness Dry daily, and the Spa Select cans once or twice per week. Wellness cans also have very high quality ingredients - my Kitties love the Chicken and Turkey flavors. Innova Cat & Kitten cans are also very good, and if I remember correctly, the only grain it contains is a little Brown Rice. Their coats, skin condition, stools, and weight have all improved with these 3 brands of food, and they rarely if ever vomit now.

I do not know what (if any) impact grains have on UTIs and Crystals, but probably someone here will know.

I'm in the process of switching my Kitties to a grain free diet (mainly wet) to include EVO Cat & Kitten, Wellness Chicken, Wellness Turkey & Salmon, and Wilderness Chicken dry and Wellness Core dry for snacking.

I hope your Kitty will be feeling much better, very soon!

I feed BB kitten, so I figured I'd buy the BB Spa Select. He wouldn't touch it. Not even a taste. It's a good quality food, but if he won't eat it, well, the 1.29 a can is tossed out.

I feed merrick cans, I would try anything before going friskies. If you need a special diet-the Science diet veterinary diets are very good. The regular science diet is just eh.
